a splitter assembly mounted to the housing and configured to move longitudinally relative to the housing, said splitter assembly comprising a tether and a wedge, said tether and said wedge being configured to be moved independently relative to one another;
wherein said wedge comprises a proximal end and a distal end, said proximal end of said wedge being wider than said distal end of said wedge;
wherein said tether comprises a radially-reduced profile before said wedge is moved proximally relative to said tether, and wherein said tether comprises a radially-expanded profile after said wedge is moved distally relative to said tether;
wherein said wedge is configured to be moved longitudinally relative to said housing via a hydraulic ram, said hydraulic ram comprising:
a hydraulic chamber having a central tube passing therethrough, said central tube being sized to receive said shaft therein;
a piston movably disposed within said hydraulic chamber and disposed coaxial with said central tube;
at least one piston rod having a proximal end and a distal end, said proximal end of said at least one piston rod being mounted to said piston and extending distally therefrom out of said hydraulic chamber and said distal end of said at least one piston rod being mounted to said wedge;
wherein said piston divides said hydraulic chamber into an upper chamber and a lower chamber, and further wherein said piston can be moved longitudinally by introducing hydraulic fluid into one of said upper chamber and said lower chamber.
2. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said wedge comprises a bore passing through said wedge between said proximal end of said wedge and said distal end of said wedge, wherein said bore is sized to receive said shaft of said drill assembly, and further wherein said drill assembly is disposed proximal to said splitter assembly such that said shaft of said drill assembly passes through said bore of said wedge and through said tether.
3. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said shaft comprises a bore extending between said proximal end of said shaft and said distal end of said shaft, and further wherein said drill bit comprises at least one opening passing therethrough, said at least one opening of said drill bit being in fluid communication with said bore of said shaft.
4. Apparatus according to claim 3 further comprising an air compressor fluidically connected to said bore of said shaft configured to pass compressed air through said bore of said shaft and out said at least one opening of said drill bit, whereby to force debris out of the hole drilled in the rock.
5. Apparatus according to claim 3 wherein said bore of said shaft is configured to be fluidically connected to a vaccum so as to draw debris into said at least one opening of said drill bit and through said bore of said shaft, whereby to draw debris out of the hole drilled in the rock.
6. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said proximal end of said shaft is mounted to said drill drive element, and further wherein said drill drive element is configured to be moved longitudinally relative to said housing, whereby to move said shaft longitudinally relative to said housing, whereby to drill a hole in rock.
7. Apparatus according to claim 6 wherein said drill drive element is moved longitudinally via a screw drive disposed in said housing.
8. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said tether comprises a first tether element and a second tether element, wherein said first tether element is slidably mounted to one side of said wedge and said second tether element is slidably mounted to the other side of said wedge, and further wherein said first tether element and said second tether element each comprise an inclined surface contacting said wedge, such that distal movement of said wedge relative to said first tether element and said second tether element forces said first tether element and said second tether element radially outboard.
9. Apparatus according to claim 8 wherein said first tether element and said second tether element are slidably mounted to the distal portion of said wedge.
10. Apparatus according to claim 9 wherein said first tether element and said second tether element are slidably mounted to the distal portion of said wedge via dovetail sliders.
11. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said tether is configured to be moved longitudinally relative to said housing via a tether drive element disposed in said housing.
12. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said hydraulic ram is mounted to said housing intermediate said drill drive element and said wedge.
13. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said at least one piston rod is in the form of a cylinder disposed coaxial with said central tube.
14. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said wedge comprises a lubricant channel passing longitudinally therethrough and a plurality of ports disposed along the length of said wedge and opening on the outer surface thereof, such that a lubricant may be passed through said lubricant channel and out of said plurality of ports.
15. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said housing is configured to be mounted to the arm of an excavator.Cited by (0)
