Claims

Abstract

At a corner of a TFT substrate where sealants are coated overlapping each other, a phenomenon that the sealants protrude into the display region is prevented by a structure that: the TFT substrate having an organic passivation film is formed as far as the outside of the display region. A groove-like organic passivation film removed portion is formed surrounding the display region. Since the sealants are coated overlapping each other at the corner, when a TFT substrate and a counter substrate are superposed at a predetermined gap, the width of the groove-like organic passivation film removed portion is made larger at the corner than the side in order to prevent the sealant from extending. Since an excessive sealant is absorbed in the groove-like organic passivation film removing portion of a larger width at the corner, the sealant can be prevented from protruding to the inside of the display region.

What is claimed is: 
     
       1. A liquid crystal display device comprising:
 a TFT substrate including a display region and a peripheral region, and having an organic insulation film formed in the display region and the peripheral region; 
 a counter substrate; 
 a spacer between the TFT substrate and the counter substrate; 
 a sealant formed between the peripheral region of the TFT substrate and the counter substrate; and 
 liquid crystals sandwiched between the TFT substrate and the counter substrate; 
 wherein the organic insulation film has a first portion and a second portion separated from the first portion, and the second portion and a first clearance disposed between the first portion and the second portion surround the display region in the peripheral region, 
 wherein the second portion and the first clearance overlap with the sealant, and a width of the first clearance is larger than a width of the second portion, 
 wherein the spacer is overlapped with the second portion, 
 wherein the spacer has an inner side surface facing toward the display region and the first portion has an edge facing toward an edge of the first substrate, 
 wherein a distance between the inner side surface of the spacer and the edge of the first portion is larger than the width of the second portion in a planer view, 
 wherein the TFT substrate is rectangular shape in a plane view having a side and a corner, 
 wherein a width of the first clearance at the side is smaller than the width of the first clearance at the corner, 
 wherein an extending direction of the first clearance at the corner is different from an extending direction of the first clearance at the side, and 
 wherein the width of the first clearance at the corner is about three times or more compared with the width of the first clearance at the side. 
 
     
     
       2. The liquid crystal display device according to  claim 1 , further comprising a second clearance disposed between the second portion and an edge of the first substrate. 
     
     
       3. The liquid crystal display device according to  claim 2 , the first clearance and the second clearance are groove-like portions that the organic insulation film is removed,
 the width of the first clearance is larger than a width of the second clearance. 
 
     
     
       4. The liquid crystal display device according to  claim 1 , wherein the TFT substrate further includes an inorganic insulation film covering the first portion, the first clearance and the second portion. 
     
     
       5. A liquid crystal display device comprising:
 a TFT substrate including a display region and a peripheral region, and having an organic insulation film formed in the display region and the peripheral region; 
 a counter substrate; 
 a sealant formed between the peripheral region of the TFT substrate and the counter substrate; and 
 liquid crystals sandwiched between the TFT substrate and the counter substrate; 
 wherein the organic insulation film has a first portion and a second portion separated from the first portion, and the second portion and a first clearance disposed between the first portion and the second portion surround the display region in the peripheral region, 
 wherein the second portion and the first clearance overlap with the sealant, and a width of the first clearance is larger than a width of the second portion, 
 wherein the TFT substrate is rectangular shape in a plane view having a side and a corner, 
 wherein a width of the first clearance at the side is smaller than the width of the first clearance at the corner, 
 wherein an extending direction of the first clearance at the corner is different from an extending direction of the first clearance at the side, and 
 wherein the width of the first clearance at the corner is about three times or more compared with the width of the first clearance at the side. 
 
     
     
       6. The liquid crystal display device according to  claim 5 , wherein the TFT substrate further includes an inorganic insulation film covering the first portion, the first clearance and the second portion. 
     
     
       7. The liquid crystal display device according to  claim 6  further comprising a second clearance disposed between the second portion and an edge of the first substrate. 
     
     
       8. The liquid crystal display device according to  claim 7 , the first clearance and the second clearance are groove-like portions that the organic insulation film is removed,
 the width of the first clearance is larger than a width of the second clearance. 
 
     
     
       9. A liquid crystal display device comprising:
 a TFT substrate including a display region and a peripheral region, and having an organic insulation film formed in the display region and the peripheral region; 
 a counter substrate; 
 a spacer between the TFT substrate and the counter substrate; 
 a sealant formed between the peripheral region of the TFT substrate and the counter substrate; and 
 liquid crystals sandwiched between the TFT substrate and the counter substrate; 
 wherein the organic insulation film has a first portion and a second portion separated from the first portion, and the second portion and a first clearance disposed between the first portion and the second portion surround the display region in the peripheral region, 
 wherein the second portion and the first clearance overlap with the sealant, and a width of the first clearance is larger than a width of the second portion, 
 wherein the spacer is overlapped with the second portion, a distance between the spacer and the first portion is larger than the width of the second portion in a planer view, 
 wherein the spacer has an inner side surface facing toward the display region and the first portion has an edge facing toward an edge of the first substrate, 
 wherein the distance between the inner side surface of the spacer and the edge of the first portion is larger than the width of the second portion in the planer view, 
 wherein a second clearance disposed between the second portion and an edge of the first substrate, the first clearance and the second clearance are groove-like portions that the organic insulation film is removed, 
 the width of the first clearance is larger than a width of the second clearance, 
 wherein the TFT substrate is rectangular shape in a plane view having a side and a corner, 
 wherein the width of the first clearance and the width of the second clearance are compared at the corner of the TFT substrate, 
 wherein a width of the first clearance at the side is smaller than the width of the first clearance at the corner, 
 wherein an extending direction of first clearance at the corner is different from an extending direction of the first clearance at the side, and 
 wherein the width of the first clearance at the corner is about three times or more compared with the width of the first clearance at the side. 
 
     
     
       10. The liquid crystal display device according to  claim 9 , wherein the TFT substrate further includes an inorganic insulation film covering the first portion, the first clearance and the second portion.
