Method and implant device for grafting adjacent vertebral bodies
Abstract
A methodology for grafting together adjacent bony structures is provided using an implant device having an endplate with an inner disc portion and outer ring portion spaced from the inner disc portion by a connecting wall disposed there between. An endplate interior surface includes a retaining structure for securing the endplate to one of the bony structures, and endplate an exterior surface has an integrally formed socket. A ball-joint rod has a longitudinally extending body and an end, and at least a portion of the ball-joint rod end is curvilinear in shape. The curvilinear ball-joint rod end is rotatably disposed in the endplate socket to fixedly interconnect the bony structures.

1. An implant device for grafting together adjacent bony structures of a body comprising:
a first endplate having a first outer, bone-contacting surface and a first inner disc portion having a first integrally formed socket;
a second endplate having a second outer, bone-contacting surface and a second inner disc portion having a second integrally formed socket;
a rod having a longitudinally extending rod body and a first end and a second end, wherein the first and second ends each terminate at a curvilinear end, the rod body includes a groove positioned adjacent each curvilinear end, the grooves extending circumferentially around the rod body, wherein the curvilinear ends are rotatably disposed in the corresponding first and second sockets to connect the first and second endplates and allow for angular adjustment of the first and second endplates; and
a fusion shaft member disposed on the rod body, wherein the fusion shaft member includes a body having a ring shape.
2. The implant device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first end and the second end of the rod body includes a head portion connected to a separate shaft portion.
3. The implant device of claim 2 , wherein the head portion is joined to the shaft portion with a pin extending through the head portion and the shaft portion.
4. The implant device of claim 1 , further comprising a retaining structure, wherein the retaining structure comprises a spike protruding from the first or second endplate.
5. The implant device of claim 4 , wherein the first or second endplate further comprises a cleat shorter than the spike extending from the endplate.
6. The implant device of claim 1 , wherein the first and second endplates each include a passageway for transporting bone material therethrough.
7. The implant device of claim 1 , further comprising a fastener adapted to extend through an aperture in the first or second endplate into the bony structure for securing the first or second endplate to the bony structure.
8. The implant device of claim 1 , wherein the curvilinear ends are semi spherical in shape.
9. The implant device of claim 1 , wherein the curvilinear ends are spherical in shape.
10. An implant device for grafting together adjacent bony structures of a body comprising:
a first endplate having a first outer, bone-contacting surface and a first inner disc portion having a first integrally formed socket;
a second endplate having a second outer, bone-contacting surface and a second inner disc portion having a second integrally formed socket;
a rod having a longitudinally extending rod body and a first end and a second end, the rod body includes a shaft portion, a separate first head portion at the first end, and a separate second head portion at the second end, wherein the first and second head portions each terminate at a curvilinear end, wherein the curvilinear ends are rotatably disposed in the corresponding first and second sockets to connect the first and second endplates and allow for angular adjustment of the first and second endplates; and
a fusion shaft member disposed on the rod body, wherein the fusion shaft member includes a body having a ring shape.
11. The implant device of claim 10 , wherein the first or second head portion is joined to the shaft portion with a pin extending through the head portion and the shaft portion.
12. The implant device of claim 10 , wherein the rod body includes a groove positioned adjacent each curvilinear end, the grooves extending circumferentially around the rod body.
13. The implant device of claim 10 , further comprising a retaining structure, wherein the retaining structure comprises a spike protruding from the first or second endplate.
14. The implant device of claim 13 , wherein the first or second endplate further comprises a cleat shorter than the spike extending from endplate.
15. The implant device of claim 10 , wherein the first and second endplates each include a passageway for transporting bone material therethrough.
16. The implant device of claim 10 , further comprising a fastener adapted to extend through an aperture in the first or second endplate into the bony structure for securing the first or second endplate to the bony structure.
17. The implant device of claim 10 , wherein the curvilinear ends are semi spherical in shape.
