Claims

Abstract

Embodiments are disclosed for a wearable computer with fitness machine connectivity for improved activity monitoring. In an embodiment, a method comprises: establishing, by a processor of a wireless device, a wireless communication connection with a fitness machine; obtaining, by the processor, machine data from the fitness machine; determining, by the processor, a workout session according to the machine data; initiating the workout session on the wireless device; during the workout session: obtaining, from a sensor of the computing device, physiological data of a user of the fitness machine; determining, by the processor, fitness data for the user based on the physiological data, the machine data and at least one user characteristic; and sending, by the processor, the fitness data to the fitness machine.

What is claimed is: 
     
       1. A method comprising:
 establishing, by a processor of a wearable computer, a wireless communication connection with a fitness machine; 
 obtaining, by the processor, first machine data from the fitness machine, the first machine data specifying a type of the fitness machine; 
 determining, by the processor, a workout session according to the first machine data; 
 initiating the workout session on the wearable computer; 
 during the workout session:
 obtaining, by the processor, second machine data from the fitness machine; 
 obtaining, by the processor, a metabolic equivalent of tasks based at least in part on the specified type of fitness machine and the second machine data; 
 obtaining, from a sensor of the wearable computer, physiological data of a user of the fitness machine, where the physiological data of the user is obtained concurrently with the second machine data; 
 determining, by the processor, fitness data for the user based at least in part on a combination of the physiological data and the metabolic equivalent of tasks wherein the fitness data includes calories burned by the user; 
 responsive to termination of the workout session, generating a workout session summary that includes the fitness data; and 
 displaying, by a display device of the wearable computer or the fitness machine, the workout session summary including the fitness data. 
 
 
     
     
       2. The method of  claim 1 , wherein establishing the wireless communication connection with the fitness machine further comprises:
 detecting proximity of the wearable computer to the fitness machine; and 
 prompting the user to initiate pairing of the wearable computer and fitness machine or automatically pairing the wearable computer and fitness machine. 
 
     
     
       3. The method of  claim 2 , further comprising:
 requesting, by the processor, user consent to sharing their fitness data with the fitness machine; 
 receiving, by the processor, the user consent; and 
 responsive to receiving the user consent, prompting the user to initiate pairing of the wearable computer to the fitness machine. 
 
     
     
       4. The method of  claim 2 , further comprising:
 receiving third machine data indicating that the fitness machine has been paused; 
 starting a timer; 
 determining that the timer has exceeded a threshold time while the fitness machine is paused; and 
 terminating the workout session. 
 
     
     
       5. The method of  claim 1 , further comprising:
 receiving third machine data indicating that the wearable computer and fitness machine have disconnected; 
 starting a timer; 
 determining that the timer has exceeded a threshold time while the wearable computer wireless device and the fitness machine are disconnected; and 
 terminating the workout session. 
 
     
     
       6. The method of  claim 1 , wherein the calories burned is determined from the second machine data and the physiological data includes the user's heart rate calculated by the wearable computer. 
     
     
       7. A wearable computer comprising:
 one or more processors; 
 memory coupled to the one or more processors and configured to store instructions, which, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:
 establishing a wireless communication connection with a fitness machine; 
 obtaining first machine data from the fitness machine, the first machine data specifying a type of the fitness machine; 
 determining a workout session according to the first machine data; 
 initiating the workout session on the wireless device; 
 during the workout session:
 obtaining second machine data from the fitness machine; 
 obtaining a metabolic equivalent of tasks based at least in part on the specified type of fitness machine and the second machine data; 
 obtaining physiological data of a user of the fitness machine, where the physiological data of the user is obtained concurrently with the second machine data; 
 determining fitness data for the user based at least in part on a combination of the physiological data and the metabolic equivalent of tasks, wherein the fitness data includes calories burned by the user; 
 
 responsive to termination of the workout session, generating a workout session summary that includes the fitness data; and 
 displaying, by a display device of the wearable computer or the fitness machine, the workout session summary including the fitness data. 
 
 
     
     
       8. The wearable computer of  claim 7 , wherein establishing the wireless communication connection with the fitness machine further comprises:
 detecting proximity of the wearable computer to the fitness machine; and 
 prompting the user to initiate pairing of the wearable computer and fitness machine. 
 
     
     
       9. The wearable computer of  claim 8 , the operations further comprising:
 requesting, by the processor, user consent to sharing their fitness data with the fitness machine; 
 receiving, by the processor, the user consent; and 
 responsive to receiving the user consent, prompting the user to initiate pairing of the wearable computer to the fitness machine. 
 
     
     
       10. The wearable computer of  claim 8 , the operations further comprising:
 receiving machine data indicating that the fitness machine has been paused; 
 starting a timer; 
 determining that the timer has exceeded a threshold time while the fitness machine is paused; and 
 terminating the workout session. 
 
     
     
       11. The wearable computer of  claim 7 , the operations further comprising:
 receiving third machine data indicating that the wearable computer and fitness machine have disconnected; 
 starting a timer; 
 determining that the timer has exceeded a threshold time while the wearable computer and the fitness machine are disconnected; and 
 terminating the workout session. 
 
     
     
       12. The wearable computer of  claim 7 , wherein the calories burned is determined from the second machine data and the physiological data is the user's heart rate calculated by the wearable computer. 
     
     
       13. A non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium having instructions stored thereon, that when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:
 establishing, by a processor of a wearable computer, a wireless communication connection with a fitness machine; 
 obtaining, by the processor, first machine data from the fitness machine, the first machine data specifying a type of the fitness machine; 
 determining, by the processor, a workout session according to the first machine data; 
 initiating the workout session on the wearable computer; 
 during the workout session:
 obtaining, by the processor, second machine data from the fitness machine; 
 obtaining, by the processor, a metabolic equivalent of tasks based at least in part on the specified type of the fitness machine and the second machine data: 
 obtaining, from a sensor of the wearable computer, physiological data of a user of the fitness machine, where the physiological data of the user is obtained concurrently with the second machine data; 
 determining, by the processor, fitness data for the user based at least in part on a combination of the physiological data and the metabolic equivalent of tasks, wherein the fitness data includes calories burned by the user; 
 
 responsive to termination of the workout session, generating a workout session summary that includes the fitness data; and 
 displaying, by a display device of the wearable computer or the fitness machine, the workout session summary including the fitness data. 
 
     
     
       14. The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium of  claim 13 , wherein the calories burned is determined from the second machine data and the user's heart rate calculated by the wearable computer. 
     
     
       15. The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium of  claim 13 , further comprising:
 detecting proximity of the wearable computer to the fitness machine; 
 prompting the user to initiate pairing of the wearable computer and fitness machine or automatically pairing the wearable computer and fitness machine, 
 requesting, by the processor, user consent to sharing their fitness data with the fitness machine; 
 receiving, by the processor, the user consent; and 
 responsive to receiving the user consent, prompting the user to initiate pairing of the wearable computer to the fitness machine. 
 
     
     
       16. The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium of  claim 13 , further comprising:
 receiving third machine data indicating that the fitness machine has been paused; 
 starting a timer; 
 determining that the timer has exceeded a threshold time while the fitness machine is paused; and 
 terminating the workout session. 
 
     
     
       17. A method comprising:
 initiating, by a processor of a wearable computer, a first workout session on the wearable computer; 
 during the first workout session:
 obtaining, from a motion sensor of the wearable computer, motion data; 
 determining, by the processor, first fitness data for a user of the wearable computer based on the motion data; 
 establishing, by a processor of the wearable computer, a wireless communication connection with a fitness machine; 
 terminating, by the processor, the first workout session; 
 saving, by the processor, the first fitness data in memory on the wearable computer; 
 obtaining, by the processor, first machine data from the fitness machine, the first machine data specifying a type of the fitness machine; 
 determining a second workout session according to the first machine data; 
 initiating the second workout session on the wireless device; 
 during the second workout session:
 obtaining second machine data from the fitness machine; 
 obtaining a metabolic equivalent of tasks based at least in part on the specified type of fitness machine and the second machine data; 
 obtaining, from a physiological sensor of the wearable computer, physiological data of the user of the fitness machine, where the physiological data of the user is obtained concurrently with the second machine data; 
 determining, by the processor, second fitness data for the user based at least in part on a combination of the physiological data and the metabolic equivalent of tasks, wherein the second fitness data includes calories burned by the user; 
 
 responsive to termination of the second workout session, generating a workout session summary that includes the first and second fitness data; and 
 displaying, by a display device of the wearable computer or the fitness machine, the workout session summary. 
 
 
     
     
       18. The method of  claim 17 , wherein the first fitness data includes distance traveled based on data from a digital pedometer of the wearable computer, and the second fitness data includes distance traveled based on the second machine data. 
     
     
       19. The method of  claim 17 , wherein the calories burned is determined from the second machine data and the physiological data includes the user's heart rate calculated by the wearable computer. 
     
     
       20. The method of  claim 17 , further comprising:
 receiving third machine data indicating that the fitness machine has been paused; 
 starting a timer; 
 determining that the timer has exceeded a threshold time while the fitness machine is paused; and 
 terminating the second workout session. 
 
     
     
       21. The method of  claim 17 , further comprising:
 receiving third machine data indicating that the wearable computer and fitness machine have disconnected; 
 starting a timer; 
 determining that the timer has exceeded a threshold time while the wearable computer and the fitness machine are disconnected; and 
 terminating the second workout session. 
 
     
     
       22. A wearable computer comprising:
 a motion sensor; 
 a physiological sensor; 
 a wireless transceiver; 
 a display device; 
 one or more processors; 
 memory coupled to the one or more processors and configured to store instructions, which, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:
 initiating a first workout session on the wearable computer; 
 during the first workout session:
 obtaining, from the motion sensor, motion data; 
 determining first fitness data for a user of the wearable computer based on the motion data; 
 establishing, using the wireless transceiver, a wireless communication connection with a fitness machine; 
 terminating the first workout session; 
 saving the first fitness data in the memory; 
 obtaining first machine data from the fitness machine, the first machine data specifying a type of the fitness machine; 
 determining a second workout session according to the first machine data; 
 initiating the second workout session; 
 during the second workout session:
 obtaining second machine data from the fitness machine; 
 obtaining a metabolic equivalent of tasks based at least in part on the specified type of fitness machine and the second machine data; 
 obtaining, from the physiological sensor, physiological data of the user of the fitness machine, where the physiological data of the user is obtained concurrently with the second machine data; 
 determining second fitness data for the user based at least in part on a combination of the physiological data and the metabolic equivalent of tasks, wherein the second fitness data includes calories burned by the user; 
 
 responsive to termination of the second workout session, generating a workout session summary that includes the first and second fitness data; and 
 displaying, using the display device, the workout session summary. 
 
 
 
     
     
       23. The wearable computer of  claim 22 , wherein the calories burned is determined from the second machine data and the physiological data includes a heart rate of the user calculated by the wearable computer. 
     
     
       24. The wearable computer of  claim 22 , wherein the first fitness data includes distance traveled based on data from a digital pedometer of the wearable computer, and the second fitness data includes distance traveled based on the second machine data. 
     
     
       25. The wearable computer of  claim 22 , the operations further comprising:
 receiving third machine data indicating that the fitness machine has been paused; 
 starting a timer; 
 determining that the timer has exceeded a threshold time while the fitness machine is paused; and 
 terminating the second workout session. 
 
     
     
       26. The wearable computer of  claim 22 , the operations further comprising:
 receiving third machine data indicating that the wearable computer and fitness machine have disconnected; 
 starting a timer; 
 determining that the timer has exceeded a threshold time while the wearable computer and the fitness machine are disconnected; and 
 terminating the second workout session.
