Abstract

An illustrative method includes a storage management system ingesting a data item into a unified storage system via a storage system interface among a plurality of storage system interfaces associated with the unified storage system, determining, in response to the ingesting of the data item into the unified storage system, an operation based on the data item, and providing a notification of the operation to an orchestration system configured to manage an execution of the operation by a computing system associated with the unified storage system. In certain embodiments, the unified storage system may be implemented as compute-aware storage system such as a container orchestrator-aware storage system.

What is claimed is: 
     
       1. A method comprising:
 ingesting, by a storage management system of a unified storage system that is communicatively coupled to a computing system, a data item into the unified storage system via a storage system interface among a plurality of storage system interfaces associated with the unified storage system, wherein the data item is ingested into the unified storage system without going through the computing system; 
 determining, by the storage management system in response to the ingesting of the data item into the unified storage system, an operation based on the data item; and 
 providing, by the storage management system, a notification of the operation to a container orchestration system of the computing system, the container orchestration system configured to manage an execution of the operation by the computing system in response to the notification. 
 
     
     
       2. The method of  claim 1 , wherein:
 each storage system interface associated with the unified storage system corresponds to a different storage type; and 
 the storage system interface through which the data item is ingested into the unified storage system corresponds to a storage type different from a storage type of the unified storage system. 
 
     
     
       3. The method of  claim 1 , wherein:
 the storage system interface corresponds to an object storage type; and 
 the unified storage system corresponds to a file storage type. 
 
     
     
       4. The method of  claim 1 , wherein:
 the container orchestration system is distinct from the storage management system; and 
 the container orchestration system is unaware of the ingesting of the data item into the unified storage system. 
 
     
     
       5. The method of  claim 1 , wherein:
 the determining of the operation is performed by a software component that is associated with the storage management system and resides within the container orchestration system. 
 
     
     
       6. The method of  claim 1 , wherein:
 the determining of the operation includes determining a serverless function based on one or more item attributes of the data item; and 
 the notification of the operation specifies the serverless function to be executed by the computing system. 
 
     
     
       7. The method of  claim 1 , wherein:
 the determining of the operation includes determining a stateful application based on one or more item attributes of the data item; and 
 the notification of the operation specifies the stateful application to be executed by the computing system. 
 
     
     
       8. The method of  claim 1 , further comprising:
 detecting, by the storage management system, an event within the unified storage system, the event being associated with the operation; 
 determining, by the storage management system, an additional operation based on the event; and 
 providing, by the storage management system, an additional notification of the additional operation to the container orchestration system configured to manage an execution of the additional operation by the computing system. 
 
     
     
       9. The method of  claim 8 , wherein:
 the event comprises a storing of an output corresponding to the data item within the unified storage system, the output being generated by the operation executed by the computing system; and 
 the additional operation comprises presenting a notification of the output in the storage system interface. 
 
     
     
       10. The method of  claim 9 , wherein:
 the unified storage system corresponds to a file storage type; and 
 the data item and the output are stored as data files within the unified storage system and accessible through the plurality of storage system interfaces associated with the unified storage system. 
 
     
     
       11. The method of  claim 1 , wherein:
 the computing system is implemented as a container system, the container system being configured to implement one or more containerized applications on one or more nodes in a cluster of the container system; 
 the container orchestration system is implemented on a master node of the cluster; and 
 the storage management system is implemented as a storage management containerized application on the one or more nodes of the cluster. 
 
     
     
       12. The method of  claim 1 , wherein the unified storage system supports multiple storage protocols. 
     
     
       13. The method of  claim 1 , wherein the container orchestration system is configured to assign a storage volume of the unified storage system to a node of the computing system. 
     
     
       14. A system comprising:
 a memory storing instructions; and 
 a processor communicatively coupled to the memory and configured to execute the instructions to:
 ingest a data item into a unified storage system via a storage system interface among a plurality of storage system interfaces associated with the unified storage system wherein the data item is ingested into the unified storage system without going through a computing system to which the unified storage system is communicatively coupled; 
 determine, in response to the ingesting of the data item into the unified storage system, an operation based on the data item; and 
 provide a notification of the operation to a container orchestration system of the computing system, the container orchestration system configured to manage an execution of the operation by the computing system in response to the notification. 
 
 
     
     
       15. The system of  claim 14 , wherein:
 each storage system interface associated with the unified storage system corresponds to a different storage type; and 
 the storage system interface through which the data item is ingested into the unified storage system corresponds to a storage type different from a storage type of the unified storage system. 
 
     
     
       16. The system of  claim 14 , wherein:
 the container orchestration system is distinct from the system; and 
 the container orchestration system is unaware of the ingesting of the data item into the unified storage system. 
 
     
     
       17. The system of  claim 14 , wherein:
 the determining of the operation includes determining a serverless function based on one or more item attributes of the data item; and 
 the notification of the operation specifies the serverless function to be executed by the computing system. 
 
     
     
       18. The system of  claim 14 , wherein:
 the determining of the operation includes determining a stateful application based on one or more item attributes of the data item; and 
 the notification of the operation specifies the stateful application to be executed by the computing system. 
 
     
     
       19. The system of  claim 14 , wherein the processor is further configured to execute the instructions to:
 detect an event within the unified storage system, the event comprising a storing of an output generated by the operation executing by the computing system; 
 determine an additional operation based on the event; and 
 provide an additional notification of the additional operation to the container orchestration system configured to manage an execution of the additional operation by the computing system. 
 
     
     
       20. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed, direct a processor of a computing device to:
 ingest a data item into a unified storage system via a storage system interface among a plurality of storage system interfaces associated with the unified storage system, wherein the data item is ingested into the unified storage system without going through a computing system to which the unified storage system is communicatively coupled; 
 determine, in response to the ingesting of the data item into the unified storage system, an operation based on the data item; and 
 provide a notification of the operation to a container orchestration system of the computing system, the container orchestration system configured to manage an execution of the operation by the computing system in response to the notification.
