Abstract

Ternary pigment compositions of compounds of formulae (I), (II) and (III) obtainable by the reaction of succinic acid diesters with from 90 to 15 mol % 4-methylbenzonitrile and from 10 to 85 mol % 3-methylbenzonitrile, the molar amounts of the benzonitriles totaling 100 mol %, a process for the preparation thereof, and the use thereof for pigmenting organic material.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
I/we claim:

1 . A ternary pigment composition comprising compounds of formulae (I), (II) and (III)

obtainable by the reaction of a succinic acid diester with from 90 to 15 mol % 4-methylbenzonitrile and from 10 to 85 mol % 3-methylbenzonitrile, the molar amounts of the 4-methyl- and 3-methyl-benzonitriles totalling 100 mol %.

         2 . A pigment composition according to claim 1 , having a hiding power ΔE*−S/W of <8.

3 . A pigment composition according to claim 1 , having a colour shade angle h in the range from 35 to 42, obtainable by the reaction of a succinic acid diester with from 80 to 55 mol % 4-methylbenzonitrile and from 20 to 45 mol % 3-methylbenzonitrile.

         4 . A pigment composition according to claim 3 , having a saturation value C* in the range from 65 to 80.

5 . A pigment composition according to claim 1 , having a colour shade angle h in the range from 35 to 45, obtainable by the reaction of a succinic acid diester with from 45 to 25 mol % 4-methylbenzonitrile and from 55 to 75 mol % 3-methylbenzonitrile.

6 . A pigment composition according to claim 1 , obtainable by the reaction of a succinic acid diester with from 80 to 55 mol % 4-methylbenzonitrile and from 20 to 45 mol % 3-methylbenzonitrile, the crystal lattice of which composition substantially corresponds to that of compound (I).

7 . A pigment composition according to claim 1 , obtainable by the reaction of a succinic acid diester with from 45 to 25 mol % 4-methylbenzonitrile and from 55 to 75 mol % 3-methylbenzonitrile, the crystal lattice of which composition substantially corresponds to that of compound (II).

8 . A process for the preparation of a pigment composition according to claim 1 , by the reaction of a succinic acid diester with different benzonitriles in an organic solvent, in the presence of a base, at elevated temperature, which comprises using the benzonitriles in a molar ratio of from 90 to 15 mol % 4-methylbenzonitrile to from 10 to 85 mol % 3-methylbenzonitrile.

9 . A composition comprising a pigment composition according to any one of claims 1 to 7 or a pigment composition that has been prepared according to claim 8 .

10 . A method of pigmenting organic material, which comprises blending organic material with a tinctorially effective amount of a pigment composition according to any one of claims 1 to 7 or of a pigment composition that has been prepared according to claim 8 , or of a composition according to claim 9 .
