Abstract
A method of processing feathers and products produced thereby. The method preferably comprises the step of reducing feathers in at least one of a refiner and a pulper. A cleaning agent is preferably added to the feather material before and/or after the reducing step. The cleaning agent will preferably be hydrogen peroxide, detergent, a surface acting surfactant, bleach, or a combination thereof. The method can also include the steps of (a) adding paper pulp to the reduced feather material and then (b) forming a product from the combined material.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedWhat is claimed is:
. A method of processing feathers comprising the step of reducing said feathers in a reducing apparatus selected from the group consisting of at least one refiner, at least one pulper, and combinations thereof.
. The method of claim 1 wherein said reducing apparatus comprises a disc mill.
. The method of claim 1 wherein said reducing apparatus comprises a high shear pulper.
. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of adding a cleaning agent to said feathers.
. The method of claim 4 wherein said cleaning agent is added to said feathers such that said cleaning agent is present with said feathers in said reducing apparatus.
. The method of claim 4 wherein at least a portion of said cleaning agent is added to said feathers after said step of reducing.
. The method of claim 4 wherein said cleaning agent is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen peroxide, detergent, surface acting surfactants, bleach and combinations thereof.
. The method of claim 4 wherein said cleaning agent comprises hydrogen peroxide.
. The method of claim 4 wherein said cleaning agent comprises a detergent.
. The method of claim 1 wherein a reduced feather material is produced in said step of reducing and said method further comprising the step of separating said reduced feather material into a fiber material and a quill material.
. The method of claim 10 wherein said fiber material and said quill material are separated in said step of separating using at least one hydraulic screen.
. The method of claim 10 wherein said fiber material and said quill material are separated in said step of separating using at least one centrifugal cleaner.
. The method of claim 10 further comprising the step of drying said quill material in a high agitation dryer.
. The method of claim 1 wherein a reduced feather material is produced in said step of reducing and wherein said method further comprises the step of adding a bonding agent to at least a portion of said reduced feather material.
. The method of claim 14 further comprising the step of forming a product from said reduced feather material having said bonding agent added thereto.
. The method of claim 1 wherein a reduced feather material is produced in said step of reducing and wherein said method further comprises the step of forming a sheet product from said reduced feather material.
. The method of claim 1 wherein a reduced feather material is produced in said step of reducing and wherein said method further comprises the step of forming a molded product from said reduced feather material.
. The method of claim 1 wherein a reduced feather material is produced in said step of reducing and wherein said method further comprises the step of adding a reduced paper material to at least a portion of said reduced feather material to form a combined reduced material.
. The method of claim 18 further comprising the step of forming a product from said combined reduced material.
. The method of claim 19 wherein said product is formed in said step of forming using a sheeting process.
. The method of claim 19 wherein said product is formed in said step of forming using a molding process.
. The method of claim 21 wherein said molding process uses a vacuum mold.
. The method of claim 18 further comprising the step of adding a bonding agent to at least one of said reduced feather material, said reduced paper material, and said combined reduced material.
. A reduced feather product produced by the method of claim 2 .
. A reduced feather product produced by the method of claim 3 .
. A reduced feather product produced by the method of claim 8 .
. A reduced feather product produced by the method of claim 9 .
. A sheet product produced by the method of claim 16 .
. A molded product produced by the method of claim 17 .
. A sheet product produced by the method of claim 20 .
. A molded product produced by the method of claim 21 .
. A molded product produced by the method of claim 22 .
. A method of processing feathers comprising the step of reducing said feathers in the presence of a cleaning agent selected from the group consisting of hydrogen peroxide, detergent, surface acting surfactants, bleach, and combinations thereof.
. The method of claim 33 wherein said cleaning agent comprises said hydrogen peroxide.
. The method of claim 33 wherein said cleaning agent comprises said detergent.
. A method comprising the steps of:
(a) adding a reduced paper material to a reduced feather material to form a combined reduced material and (b) forming a product from said combined reduced material.
. The method of claim 36 wherein said product is formed in said step of forming using a sheeting process.
. The method of claim 36 wherein said product is formed in said step of forming using a molding process.
. The method of claim 38 wherein said molding process uses a vacuum mold.
. The method of claim 36 further comprising the step of adding a bonding agent to at least one of said reduced feather material, said reduced paper material, and said combined reduced material.
. A product formed by the method of claim 36 .
. A sheet product formed by the method of claim 37 .
. A molded product formed by the method of claim 38 .
