Abstract
There are provided 1-(3-heterocyclyphenyl)isothiourea, -isourea, -guanidine and -amidine compounds of formula I Further provided are compositions and methods comprising those compounds for the control of undesirable plant species.

Y is fluorine, chlorine, nitro or cyano;
R is hydrogen,
C 1 -C 6 alkyl optionally substituted with one to three halogen atoms, one or two C(O)OR 3 groups, one cyano group, one OR 7 group, one SR 8 group, one P(O)(OR 6 ) 2 group, or
a C 3 -C 6 alkenyl, C 3 -C 6 alkynyl, phenyl, benzyl or furfural group, wherein each group is optionally substituted with one to three halogen atoms, one C 1 -C 3 alkoxy group or one C(O)OR 3 group;
R 3 is hydrogen, C 1 -C 6 alkyl or C 1 -C 6 haloalkyl;
R 6 is hydrogen of C 1 -C 3 alkyl;
R 7 is hydrogen, C 1 -C 3 alkyl or C 3 -C 6 alkoxycarbonylalkyl;
R 8 is hydrogen, C 1 -C 3 alkyl or C 3 -C 6 alkoxycarbonyl;
R 37 and R 38 are each independently hydrogen, halogen,

which method comprises reacting a substituted carbodiimide having the structural formula
