Botulinum toxin therapy for lower back pain

Abstract

A method and composition for treating a patient suffering from a disease, disorder or condition and associated pain include the administration to the patient of a therapeutically effective amount of a neurotoxin selected from a group consisting of Botulinum toxin types A, B, C, D, E, F and G.

What is claimed is:  
     
         1 . A method for treating lower back pain associated with a muscle disorder, the method comprising the step of administering by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection an effective amount of a botulinum toxin to a patient, thereby reducing lower back pain associated with a muscle disorder without development of an extensive local hypotonicity.  
     
     
         2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the muscle disorder is a muscle spasm or a spasticity condition.  
     
     
         3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the botulinum toxin is selected from the group consisting of botulinum toxin types A, B, C, D, E, F and G.  
     
     
         4 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the botulinum toxin is botulinum toxin type A.  
     
     
         5 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the muscle disorder is a cholinergic influenced muscle disorder.  
     
     
         6 . A method for treating lower back pain, the method comprising the step of intramuscular administration of a therapeutically effective amount of a botulinum toxin type A, thereby reducing a lower back pain without development of an extensive hypotonicity.  
     
     
         7 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein the botulinum toxin is administered to a lumbar muscle unilaterally on a side of a maximum pain.  
     
     
         8 . A method for treating lower back pain associated with a muscle disorder, the method comprising the step of administering to a lower back of a patient by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection unilaterally on a side of a maximum pain a therapeutically effective amount of a botulinum toxin, thereby reducing a lower back pain associated with a muscle disorder, without development of an extensive hypotonicity.  
     
     
         9 . The method of claims  9 , wherein the botulinum toxin is selected from the group consisting of botulinum toxin types A, B, C, D, E, F and G.
