Jewelry setting with faceted cavity

Abstract

A jewelry setting for securely holding a stone, such as a gem or a diamond, where the stone has at least one peripheral tip. The setting includes a base and a plurality of prongs. The prongs have an inclined portion extending from the base outwardly at an angle, and a vertical portion projecting vertically from the inclined portion. A cavity in one or more of the prongs positioned to receive the peripheral tip of the stone is stamped in the vertical portion of the prongs. The cavity has a plurality of faceted walls adapted such that when the peripheral tip of the stone is received in the cavity, the facets of the cavity engage the facets of the peripheral tip.

What is claimed is:  
     
         1 . A jewelry setting for setting a stone, said stone having at least one peripheral tip, said jewelry setting comprising: 
 a base;    a plurality of prongs branching outwardly and generally vertically from the base;    a cavity in at least one of the prongs, the cavity adapted to receive said peripheral tip of said stone, the cavity including an upper section, a side section and a lower section; 
 the side section comprising at least one side section polygonal facet with an upper edge and a lower edge;  
 the upper section located above the side section and comprising at least one upper section polygonal facet with a lower edge, the lower edge of the upper section polygonal facet intersecting with upper edge of the side section polygonal facet; and  
 the lower section located below the side section and comprising at least one lower section polygonal facet with an upper edge, the upper edge of the lower section polygonal facet intersecting with lower edge of the side section polygonal facet.  
   
     
     
         2 . The jewelry setting of  claim 1 , wherein the upper edge of the lower section polygonal facet and the lower edge of the upper section polygonal facet do not intersect.  
     
     
         3 . The jewelry setting of  claim 1 , wherein the lower edge of the upper section polygonal facet and the upper edge of the side section polygonal facet are coextensive.  
     
     
         4 . The jewelry setting of  claim 1 , wherein the upper edge of the lower section polygonal facet and the lower edge of the side section polygonal facet are coextensive.  
     
     
         5 . The jewelry setting of  claim 1 , wherein a top portion of at least one of the side prongs has a chamfered outer corner.  
     
     
         6 . The jewelry setting of  claim 1 , wherein the cavity further comprises one or more arcuate walls that intersect with one or more facets of the upper, lower and side sections.  
     
     
         7 . The jewelry setting of  claim 6 , wherein the cavity further comprises an annular wall.  
     
     
         8 . The jewelry setting of  claim 1 , wherein the prong having the cavity further comprises an inclined portion and a substantially vertical portion, the inclined portion being attached to the base at one end and extending outwardly at an angle from the base, the other end of the inclined portion being connected to the substantially vertical portion, and wherein the cavity is positioned at least partially in the substantially vertical portion.  
     
     
         9 . The jewelry setting of  claim 8 , wherein at least a portion of the cavity is positioned in the inclined portion.  
     
     
         10 . The jewelry setting of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one side section polygonal facet, the at least one upper section polygonal facet, and the at least one lower section polygonal facet are each at least partially vertically orientated.  
     
     
         11 . A jewelry setting for seating a stone, the stone having a peripheral tip with a plurality of stone facets generally converging at said peripheral tip, the setting comprising: 
 a base;    a plurality of prongs branching outwardly from the base; and    a cavity in at least one of the prongs, the cavity having a plurality of faceted walls and a plurality of arcuate walls, at least some of the plurality of faceted walls adapted to engage said facets of said stone.    
     
     
         12 . The jewelry setting of  claim 1 , wherein the cavity further comprises an annular wall.  
     
     
         13 . A jewelry setting for seating a stone, the stone having a peripheral tip with a plurality of stone facets generally converging at said peripheral tip, the setting comprising: 
 a base;    a plurality of prongs extending upwardly in a generally vertical direction from the base;    a first cavity formed in at least a first prong of the plurality of prongs, the first cavity having a plurality of cavity facets, the cavity being adapted for receiving the peripheral tip of the stone, and each cavity facet of the plurality of cavity facets being adapted to contact a corresponding similarly-orientated facet of said plurality of facets of said stone.    
     
     
         14 . The jewelry setting of  claim 13  further including said stone wherein said stone is a princess cut and wherein the plurality of prongs also include a second prong, a third prong and a forth prong, the second, third and forth prongs having second, third and forth cavities respectively formed therein, the second, third and forth cavities being configurationally similar to the first cavity.  
     
     
         15 . The jewelry setting of  claim 13  further including said stone wherein said stone is a marquis cut, and wherein the plurality of prongs also include a second prong, the second prongs having a second cavity formed therein, the second cavity being configurationally similar to the first cavity.  
     
     
         16 . The jewelry setting of  claim 13  further including said stone wherein said stone has a pear-shaped cut.  
     
     
         17 . The jewelry setting of  claim 13 , wherein the first cavity further comprises one or more arcuate walls.  
     
     
         18 . The jewelry setting of  claim 13 , wherein the plurality of facets includes at least one substantially vertically-orientated facet.  
     
     
         19 . The jewelry setting of  claim 18 , wherein the plurality of facets further includes at least one inclined facet, the upwardly-extending inclined facet extending upwardly at an angle from a common edge with the substantially vertically orientated facet.  
     
     
         20 . The jewelry setting of  claim 18 , wherein the plurality of facets further includes at least one downwardly-extending inclined facet, the downwardly-extending inclined facet extending downwardly at an angle from a common edge with the substantially vertically orientated facet.
