Abstract
Medical implants are provided which release an anthracycline, fluoropyrimidine, folic acid antagonist, podophylotoxin, camptothecin, hydroxyurea, and/or platinum complex, thereby inhibiting or reducing the incidence of infection associated with the implant.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modifiedWe claim:
. A medical implant which releases an anthracycline, fluoropyrimidine, folic acid antagonist, podophylotoxin, camptothecin, hydroxyurea, or platinum complex.
. The medical implant according to claim 1 wherein said implant is covered or coated in whole or in part with a composition comprising an anthracycline, fluoropyrimidine, folic acid antagonist, podophylotoxin, camptothecin, hydroxyurea, or platinum complex.
. The medical implant according to claim 1 or 2 wherein said anthracycline is doxorubicin or mitoxantrone.
. The medical implant according to claim 1 or 2 wherein said fluoropyrimidine is 5-fluorouracil.
. The medical implant according to claim 1 or 2 wherein said folic acid antagonist is methotrexate.
. The medical implant according to claim 1 or 2 wherein said podophylotoxin is etoposide.
. The medical implant according to claim 2 wherein said composition further comprises a polymer.
. The medical implant according to claim 7 wherein said polymer is a biodegrable or a non-biodegradable polymer.
. The medical implant according to claim 7 wherein said polymer is a polyurethane.
. The medical implant according to claim 7 wherein said polymer is a poly(lactide-co-glycolide).
. The medical implant according to any one of claims 7 to 10 wherein said fluoropyrimidine is 5-fluorouracil.
. The medical implant according to claim 1 or 2 wherein said medical implant is a vascular catheter, prosthetic heart valve, cardiac pacemaker, implantable cardioverter defibrillator, vascular graft, ear, nose, or throat implant, urological implant, endotracheal or tracheostomy tube, dialysis catheter, CNS shunt, orthopedic implant, or ocular implant.
. A composition, comprising a polymer and an anthracycline, fluoropyrimidine, folic acid antagonist, podophylotoxin, camptothecin, hydroxyurea, or platinum complex, wherein said anthracycline, fluoropyrimidine, folic acid antagonist, podophylotoxin, camptothecin, hydroxyurea, or platinum complex is present in said composition at a concentration of less than 10 −4 M.
. The composition according to claim 13 wherein said anthracycline, fluoropyrimidine, folic acid antagonist, podophylotoxin, camptothecin, hydroxyurea, or platinum complex, wherein said anthracycline, fluoropyrimidine, folic acid antagonist, podophylotoxin, camptothecin, hydroxyurea, or platinum complex is present in said composition at a concentration of less than any one of 10 −5 M, 10 −6 M, or 10 −7 M.
. The composition according to claim 13 wherein said polymer is a biodegrable or a non-biodegradable polymer.
. The medical implant according to claim 13 wherein said polymer is a polyurethane.
. The medical implant according to claim 13 wherein said polymer is a poly(lactide-co-glycolide).
. The composition according to any one of claims 13 to 17 wherein said fluoropyrimidine is 5-fluorouracil.
. A method for reducing or inhibiting infection associated with a medical implant, comprising the step of introducing into a patient a medical implant which has been covered or coated with an anthracycline, fluoropyrimidine, folic acid antagonist, podophylotoxin, camptothecin, hydroxyurea, or platinum complex.
. The method according to claim 19 wherein said fluoropyrimidine is 5-fluorouracil.
. A method for making medical implants, comprising covering or coating a medical implant with an anthracycline, fluoropyrimidine, folic acid antagonist, podophylotoxin, camptothecin, hydroxyurea, or platinum complex.
. The method according to claim 21 wherein said fluoropyrimidine is 5-fluorouracil.
. The method according to claim 21 wherein said medical implant covered or coated by dipping or by impregnation.Cited by (0)
