Wall-hugger futon

Abstract

A futon includes a support mechanism for a pivotally interconnected back frame and seat frame which includes left and right linkage subassemblies attached to the left and right end members of the futon main frame to cause the back and seat frames to shift from a couch positioning to a bed positioning and vice versa, each linkage subassembly including an arm mounting plate attached to an adjacent end member of the main frame, a seat link pivotally connected to the arm mounting plate and the seat frame, and upper and lower back links pivotally connected between the arm mounting plate and the back frame.

I claim:  
     
         1 . A futon which comprises 
 a main frame including left and right end members and front and rear cross members extending therebetween,    a seat frame and a back frame located between said left light end members, said seat and back frames being pivotally connected together, and    a support mechanism for mounting said seat and back frames between said left and right end members and controlling relative movement of said seat and back frames between a couch positioning and a bed positioning, said support mechanism comprising: 
 left and right linkage subassemblies which each include an arm mounting plate attached to an adjacent end member, a seat link pivotally connected at a lower end to said arm mounting plate and at an upper end to said seat frame, a lower back link pivotally connected at a lower end to said arm mounting plate and at an upper end to said back frame, and an upper back link pivotally connected at a lower end to said arm mounting plate and at an upper end to said back frame.  
   
     
     
         2 . A futon according to  claim 1 , wherein said support mechanism includes left and right leg subassemblies which each include a leg member pivotally attached to a forward end of said seat frame so as to pivot between an extended floor-engaging positioning and a retracted positioning beneath said seat frame.  
     
     
         3 . A futon according to  claim 2 , wherein each of said left and right leg subassemblies includes a drive link attached to a respective seat link so that movement of said seat and back frames between a bed positioning and couch positioning will automatically cause said leg members to move between said extended and retracted positionings.  
     
     
         4 . A futon according to  claim 2 , including respective springs attached to said leg members to bias said leg members in either of said extended or retracted positionings.  
     
     
         5 . A futon according to  claim 2 , including a stabilizer member extending between said leg members.  
     
     
         6 . A futon according to  claim 1 , wherein said seat frame includes left and right seat mounting angles attached to rear portions thereof, said left and right seat mounting angles including projecting portions with horizontal holes therethrough; wherein said back frame includes left and right back mounting angles attached to forward portions thereof, said left and right back mounting angles including projecting portions with horizontal holes therethrough, and respective pivot pins extending through aligned holes in said projections of said left and right seat and back mounting flanges to pivotally connect said seat and back support frames together.  
     
     
         7 . A futon according to  claim 6 , wherein said left and right seat links are pivotally connected at their upper ends to said left and right seat mounting angles, and said left and right lower and upper back mounting links are respectively pivotally connected at their upper ends to said left and right back mounting angles.  
     
     
         8 . A futon according to  claim 1 , wherein said upper back links are connected at their upper ends to said back frame at a location about halfway along a depth dimension thereof.
