Abstract

An apparatus and method for manufacturing a core or tube. The apparatus comprises a source of radiant energy and the adhesive used in the core or tubewinding process comprises an energy absorbing ingredient.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
. A method for preparing a paper or paperboard core or tube comprising bonding together one or more plies of paper or paperboard material with an adhesive comprising an energy absorbing ingredient.

. The method of claim 1 comprising applying the adhesive to at least one surface of at least one ply, exposing the applied adhesive to a source of radiant energy, bringing the adhesive present on said at least one surface of said one ply together with at least one surface of a second ply whereby said surface of said at least one ply is bonded to said surface of said second ply.

. The method of claim 1 wherein the adhesive is a waterborne adhesive.

. The method of claim 2 wherein the energy absorbing ingredient is a pigment or dye

. The method of claim 4 wherein the pigment is carbon black.

. The method of claim 4 wherein the pigment or dye absorbs near infrared energy.

. The method of claim 1 wherein the core or tube is a single ply core or tube.

. The method of claim 1 wherein the core or tube is a multi-ply core or tube.

. The method of claim 8 wherein the multi-ply core or tube is a 2-ply core or tube.

. The method of claim 2 wherein the adhesive is exposed to a non-coherent NIR energy sorce.

. The method of claim 2 wherein the adhesive is exposed to a coherent NIR energy sorce.

. A core or tube prepared by the method of claim 1 .

. The core or tube of claim 12 which is a multi-ply core or tube.

. The tube of claim 12 which is a food container.

. The core or tube of claim 12 wherein the core or tube is a consumer core or tube.

. The core or tube of claim of claim 12 wherein the core or tube is an industrial core or tube.

. The core or tube of claim 12 wherein the core or tube is used in the tissue, towel, carpet, textile, plastic film, paper, food or industrial storage industry.

. The tube of claim 17 which is a concrete column forming tube.

. The tube of claim 12 wherein the concrete column forming tube comprises from about 10 to about 30 plies.

. An apparatus for manufacturing a core or tube comprising a means for providing radiant energy to a predetermined location of at least one ply.

. The apparatus of claim 21 wherein said means is a non-coherent radiant energy source.

. The apparatus of claim 20 for manufacturing a single ply core or tube.

. The apparatus of claim 20 for manufacturing a multi-ply core or tube.
