Celery product

Abstract

A hollow, individual celery cylinder cut to a length of about one to twelve inches, and having an outside diameter of about 0.1 to 2 inch and an inside diameter of 0.075 to 1.85 inches. The celery cylinder is mild in taste and resistant to rupture upon application of internal vacuum to the cylinder, such that it can be used as a drinking straw. The cylinder can also be stuffed with a foodstuff, to form a novel food product.

What is claimed is:  
     
         1 . A celery plant having all of the characteristics of a plant produced by seed designated ASD-9, and deposited with the American Type Culture Collection assigned accession number ATCC ______.  
     
     
         2 . Seed designated ASD-9, and deposited with the American Type Culture Collection assigned accession number ATCC ______.  
     
     
         3 . Pollen of the plant of  claim 1 .  
     
     
         4 . An ovule of the plant of  claim 1 .  
     
     
         5 . A tissue culture of regenerable cells from the plant of  claim 1 .  
     
     
         6 . A tissue culture according to  claim 5 , wherein said cell or a protoplast of the tissue culture is derived from a tissue selected from the group consisting of leaves, pollen, embryos, cotyledon, hypocotyls, meristematic cells, roots, root tips, anthers, flowers, seeds, stems and suckers.  
     
     
         7 . A celery plant regenerated from the tissue culture of  claim 6 , wherein the regenerated plant is capable of expressing all of the morphological and physiological characteristics of celery cultivar ADS-9, wherein representative seed of said celery cultivar is identified as ATTC accession No. ______.  
     
     
         8 . A hollow, individual celery cylinder cut to a length of about 1 to 12 inches, and having an outside diameter of about 0.1 to 2 inches and an inside diameter of 0.075 to 1.85 inches, said celery cylinder being mild in taste and resistant to rupture upon application of internal vacuum to the cylinder.  
     
     
         9 . Celery cylinder of  claim 8 , having an outside diameter of about 0.25-0.75 inches, and an inside diameter of about 0.125-0.50 inches.  
     
     
         10 . Celery cylinder according to  claim 8 , additionally comprising a foodstuff is disposed within the hollow cylinder.  
     
     
         11 . Celery cylinder of  claim 10 , wherein the foodstuff is selected from the group consisting of peanut butter, cheese and mixtures thereof.  
     
     
         12 . Celery cylinder of  claim 11 , wherein the celery is cooked.  
     
     
         13 . Celery cylinder of  claim 12 , wherein the celery is battered before cooking.  
     
     
         14 . Celery cylinder of  claim 8 , in the form of a drinking straw.
