Medical devices containing rapamycin analogs

Abstract

A medical device comprising a supporting structure having a coating on the surface thereof, the coating containing a therapeutic substance, such as, for example, a drug. Supporting structures for the medical devices that are suitable for use in this invention include, but are not limited to, coronary stents, peripheral stents, catheters, arterio-venous grafts, by-pass grafts, and drug delivery balloons used in the vasculature. Drugs that are suitable for use in this invention include, but are not limited to,

1 . A medical device comprising a supporting structure having a coating on the surface thereof, said coating containing the therapeutic substance  
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
       
       or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or prodrug thereof.  
     
     
         2 . The medical device of  claim 1 , wherein said supporting structure is selected from the group consisting of coronary stents, peripheral stents, catheters, arterio-venous grafts, by-pass grafts, and drug delivery balloons used in the vasculature.  
     
     
         3 . The medical device of  claim 1 , wherein said coating is polymeric.  
     
     
         4 . The medical device of  claim 3 , wherein said polymeric coating is biostable.  
     
     
         5 . The medical device of  claim 3 , wherein said polymeric coating is biodegradable.  
     
     
         6 . The medical device of  claim 1 , wherein said therapeutic substance is  
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
       
       or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or prodrug thereof.

         10 . The medical device of  claim 8 , wherein said coating is polymeric.  
     
     
         11 . The medical device of  claim 10 , wherein said polymeric coating is biostable.  
     
     
         12 . The medical device of  claim 10 , wherein said polymeric coating is biodegradable.
