Abstract

Compositions and methods based on the use of fluoroalkene containing from 3 to 4 carbon atoms and at least one carbon-carbon double bond, such as 1,2,-dichloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene (HFO-1223xd) having properties highly beneficial in solvent cleaning applications.

1 . A solvent cleaning composition comprising: 
 at least one fluoroalkene of Formula I:      XCF z R 3-Z   (I)    where X is a C 2  or a C 3  unsaturated alkyl group substituted with at least one chlorine, each R is independently Cl, F, Br, I or H, and Z is 1 to 3, said composition having an ozone depleting potential (ODP) of not greater than about 0.5.    
     
     
         2 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 1  wherein said at least one fluoroalkene is a compound of Formula II:  
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
       
       where each R is independently Cl, F, Br, I or H, provided that at least one R on at least one of the unsaturated carbons is chlorine, 
 R′ is (CR 2 ) n Y,  
 Y is CRF 2    
 and n is 0 or 1.  
 
     
     
         3 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 2  wherein n is 0.  
     
     
         4 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 2  wherein Y is CF 3  and n is 0.  
     
     
         5 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 1  wherein said at least one fluoroalkene comprises at least one dichloro-trifluoropropene.  
     
     
         6 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 5  wherein said dichloro-trifluoropropene comprises 1,2-dichloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene (HFO-1223xd).  
     
     
         7 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 1  having a global warming potential (GWP) of not greater than about 150.  
     
     
         8 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 7  having a GWP of not greater than about 50.  
     
     
         9 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 1  wherein said at least one fluoroalkene has a normal boiling point of from about 45° C. to about 60° C.  
     
     
         10 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 1  wherein said at least one fluoroalkene has no flash point.  
     
     
         11 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 1  wherein said at least one fluoroalkene is miscible in mineral oil in amounts on a weight ratio basis of from about 80:20 to about 20:80.  
     
     
         12 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 1  further comprising at least one anticorrosive agent.  
     
     
         13 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 1  further comprising at least one surfactant.  
     
     
         14 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 1  further comprising at least one stabilizer.  
     
     
         15 . A solvent cleaning composition comprising: 
 at least one fluoroalkene of Formula I:      XCF z R 3-Z   (I)    where X is a C 2  or a C 3  unsaturated alkyl group substituted with at least one chlorine, each R is independently Cl, F, Br, I or H, and z is 1 to 3, said composition having a GWP of not greater than about 150.    
     
     
         16 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 15  wherein said at least one fluoroalkene is a compound of Formula II:  
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
       
       where each R is independently Cl, F, Br, I or H, provided that at least one R on at least one of the unsaturated carbons is chlorine, 
 R′ is (CR 2 ) n Y,  
 Y is CRF 2    
 and n is 0 or 1.  
 
     
     
         17 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 16  wherein n is 0.  
     
     
         18 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 16  wherein Y is CF 3  and n is 0.  
     
     
         19 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 15  wherein said at least one fluoroalkene comprises at least one dichloro-trifluoropropene.  
     
     
         20 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 19  wherein said dichloro-trifluoropropene comprises 1,2-dichloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene (HFO-1223xd).  
     
     
         21 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 15  having an ODP of not greater than 0.5.  
     
     
         22 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 21  having a GWP of not greater than about 50.  
     
     
         23 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 15  wherein said at least one fluoroalkene has a normal boiling point of from about 45° C. to about 60° C.  
     
     
         24 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 15  wherein said at least one fluoroalkene has no flash point.  
     
     
         25 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 15  wherein said at least one fluoroalkene is miscible with mineral oil in at least one weight ratio in the range of from about 80:20 to about 20:80.  
     
     
         26 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 15  further comprising at least one anticorrosive agent.  
     
     
         27 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 15  further comprising at least one surfactant.  
     
     
         28 . The solvent cleaning composition of  claim 15  further comprising at least one stabilizer.  
     
     
         29 . A method of cleaning an article containing a contaminant comprising contacting the article with an amount of at least one fluoroalkene of Formula I sufficient to solvate at least a portion of said contaminant:  
         XCF Z R 3-Z   (I)  
       where X is a C 2  or a C 3  unsaturated alkyl group substituted with at least one chlorine, each R is independently Cl, F, Br, I or H, and z is 1 to 3.  
     
     
         30 . The method of  claim 29  wherein z is at least 2.  
     
     
         31 . The method of  claim 30  wherein z is 3.  
     
     
         32 . The method of  claim 29  wherein said at least one fluoroalkene is a compound of Formula II:  
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
       
       where each R is independently Cl, F, Br, I or H, provided that at least one R on at least on of the unsaturated carbons is chlorine,

         33 . The method of  claim 32  wherein n is 0.  
     
     
         34 . The method of  claim 31  wherein said at least one fluoroalkene comprises at least one dichloro-trifluoropropene.  
     
     
         35 . The method of  claim 34  wherein said dichloro-trifluoropropene comprises 1,2-dichloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene (HFO-1223xd).  
     
     
         36 . The method of  claim 29  wherein said at least one fluoroalkene has an ODP of not greater than 0.5.  
     
     
         37 . The method of  claim 29  wherein said at least one fluoroalkene has a GWP of not greater than about 50.  
     
     
         38 . The method of  claim 37  wherein said at least one fluoroalkene has a normal boiling point of from about 45° C. to about 60° C.

         42 . The method of  claim 41  wherein said at least one fluoroalkene is miscible with mineral oil in substantially all weight ratios in the range of from about 80:20 to about 20:80.  
     
     
         43 . The method of  claim 29  wherein said contacting step comprises spraying said composition onto the article.
