Abstract

A non-coated gravure printing paper offering good gravure printability—particularly as evidenced in the reduced generation of speckling, was obtained by improving the cushioning property of the paper and thus improving its adhesion with the photogravure cylinder—by means of adding a substance or substances, such as surface-active agents, which will inhibit the binding between pulp fibers in the paper and which, when added to an ideal level of 0.3 weight % of the bone-dry weight of pulp, will reduce the tensile strength of paper in the machine direction by 5 to 40% as measured in accordance with JIS P 8113, compared with the level when no such substance is added.

1 . A gravure printing paper which comprises a substance having an effect of inhibiting a binding between pulp fibers.  
     
     
         2 . The gravure printing paper as described in  claim 1 , wherein said substance is a substance which reduces a tensile strength of paper in a machine direction by 5 to 40% as measured in accordance with JIS P 8113 when added to 0.3 weight % of a bone-dry weight of pulp, compared with the level when no such substance is added.  
     
     
         3 . The gravure printing paper as described in  claim 1  or  2 , further comprising 5 to 40 weight % of filler as an ash content.  
     
     
         4 . The gravure printing paper as described in  claim 2 , further comprising 5 to 40 weight % of filler as an ash content.  
     
     
         5 . The gravure printing paper as described in  claim 1 , wherein said substance is selected from the group consisting of a surfactant, a density reducer, and a bulk-increasing agent.  
     
     
         6 . The gravure printing paper as described in  claim 1 , wherein said substance is selected from the group consisting of a high-grade alcohol containing ethylene and/or propylene oxide, a polyhydric-alcohol type of nonionic surfactant, a high-grade fatty acid containing ethylene oxide, an ester compound of polyhydric alcohol and fatty acid, an ester compound of polyhydric alcohol and fatty acid containing ethylene oxide, and fatty polyamide amine.  
     
     
         7 . The gravure printing paper as described in  claim 1 , wherein the content of said substance is 0.01 to 10 weight % relative to the bone-dry weight of the pulp.  
     
     
         8 . The gravure printing paper as described in  claim 1 , wherein the content of said substance is 0.2 to 1.5 weight % relative to the bone-dry weight of the pulp.
