Abstract

A compactor tooth has a replaceable, ground engaging wear member mounted to a mounting block carried on the cylindrical exterior surface of a landfill-compactor wheel of a compactor machine. The mounting block has an external surface formed to engage a complementary internal cavity of the wear tip and includes a pair of circumferentially spaced sides oriented not more than 5 degrees from perpendicular to the cylindrical exterior surface of the wheel. The replaceable tip has a body with an exterior ground-engaging surface, a mounting end and a mounting-base receiving cavity opening through the mounting end. The cavity is configured to receive the mounting block thereinto and has a pair of circumferentially spaced side surfaces configured to be in close abutting relationship to a respective one of the circumferentially spaced sides of said mounting block.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A replaceable ground engaging wear member comprising:
an external, ground engaging surface; an internal cavity adapted for receiving and being mounted on a mounting block that is adapted for mounting to a work machine, the cavity being configured to receive the mounting block by sliding the mounting block into the cavity in a first direction; a groove formed on a surface of the cavity and having its longitudinal direction oriented parallel to the first direction; a through hole passing from the external, ground engaging surface to the cavity, the hole positioned such that its center is located substantially along the center of the groove.

2 . A system for providing a replaceable ground engaging wear member on a work machine comprising:
a replaceable, ground engaging wear member according to claim 1; a mounting block adapted for mounting to a work machine and having a blind hole formed on a surface thereof, the wear member mounted on the mounting block whereby the mounting block is received in the cavity of the wear member; a retainer comprising a barrel member and a fastening member, the barrel member having an exterior cylindrical surface with a diameter approximately the same as the diameter of the blind hole, the exterior cylindrical surface being inserted into the blind hole, the barrel member having first threads formed thereon and the fastening member having complementary second threads formed thereon which engage the first threads, and the fastening member being positioned in the through hole of the wear member; the barrel member further having a first surface; wherein the groove of the wear member has a first side surface that engages the first surface of the barrel member to prevent the barrel member from rotating.

3 . A method for attaching a replaceable, ground engaging wear member to a work machine comprising:
positioning a barrel member in a blind hole of a mounting block, the mounting block being mounted to the work machine, and the barrel member being rotatable in the blind hole; mounting a replaceable, ground engaging wear member onto the mounting block by engaging an internal cavity of the wear member with a portion of the mounting block, the wear member having a surface which abuts a surface of the barrel member to prevent the barrel member from rotating; mounting a fastener member to the wear member, the fastener member passing through a through hole formed in the wear member which passes from an exterior ground engaging surface of the wear member to the internal cavity, the fastener member helping to prevent the internal cavity from disengaging the portion of the mounting block.
