Abstract

A collection device for disposal of combustible debris including a base and an upper portion is disclosed. The upper portion is mounted to the base and includes an internal passage extending from an open first end that communicates with the base to a closed second end vertically spaced from the base. The upper portion has at least one aperture communicating with the internal passage adjacent the closed end of the internal passage. The base and the upper portion may be formed from a plastic material. The upper portion may also have a cover member with a longitudinal ridge or strip.

1 . A collection device for disposal of combustible debris comprising: 
 a base formed of a plastic material and comprising a top with an opening; and    an upper portion formed of a plastic material and comprising a bottom with an opening;    wherein the upper portion is mounted to the base so that the bottom of the upper portion at least partially encloses the top of the base;    wherein the upper portion includes an internal passage extending therethrough, the internal passage tapering from an open first end that communicates with the base to a closed second end vertically spaced from the base, the upper portion including a side wall and having at least one aperture formed in the side wall, the aperture communicating with the internal passage adjacent the closed end of the internal passage.    
   
   
       2 . The collection device of  claim 1  wherein the upper portion comprises a cap.  
   
   
       3 . The collection device of  claim 2  wherein the cap is integrally formed with the upper portion.  
   
   
       4 . The collection device of  claim 2  further comprising a throat passage extension on the upper portion below the cap; 
 wherein the side wall is on the throat passage extension; and    wherein the throat passage extension is enlarged relative to the internal passage.    
   
   
       5 . The collection device of  claim 1  wherein the bottom of the upper portion is generally circular.  
   
   
       6 . The collection device of  claim 1  wherein the base is generally bowl-shaped.  
   
   
       7 . The collection device of  claim 1  wherein the opening of the bottom of the upper portion is enlarged relative to the open first end of the internal passage of the upper portion.  
   
   
       8 . The collection device of  claim 1  wherein the upper portion is secured to the base at at least one point.  
   
   
       9 . The collection device of  claim 1  wherein the base comprises a rim and wherein the upper portion engages the rim of the base when the upper portion is mounted to the base.  
   
   
       10 . The collection device of  claim 1  wherein the upper portion comprises a cover member and wherein at least one strip is formed in the cover member external to the internal passage.  
   
   
       11 . The collection device of  claim 10  wherein the at least one strip comprises a plurality of longitudinal ridges.  
   
   
       12 . The collection device of  claim 10  wherein the aperture is above the at least one strip.  
   
   
       13 . The collection device of  claim 1  wherein the internal passage has a circular cross-section.  
   
   
       14 . The collection device of  claim 13  wherein the internal passage is continuously tapered.  
   
   
       15 . The collection device of  claim 1  wherein the upper portion and the base are configured to be closed in a substantially air-tight manner and the internal passage of the upper portion is long and narrow to facilitate extinguishing of smoldering debris deposited into the aperture.  
   
   
       16 . The collection device of  claim 1  wherein the plastic material comprises polyethylene.  
   
   
       17 . A collection device for disposal of combustible debris comprising: 
 a base formed of a first material and comprising a top with an opening;    a liner received within the base for easy removal and emptying;    an upper portion formed of a second material and releasably mounted to the base, wherein the upper portion includes a side wall and tapers from a first open end that communicates with the base to a second closed end vertically spaced from the base, wherein the upper portion further includes an internal passage, and wherein the upper portion further comprises a bottom with an opening enlarged relative to the first open end; and    an aperture formed in the side wall of the upper portion and that communicates with the internal passage.    
   
   
       18 . The collection device of  claim 17  wherein the base comprises a generally circular top and the upper portion comprises a generally circular bottom.  
   
   
       19 . The collection device of  claim 17  wherein the upper portion is configured to be secured to the base at at least one point.  
   
   
       20 . The collection device of  claim 17  further comprising a throat passage extension below the closed end of the upper portion.  
   
   
       21 . The collection device of  claim 17  further comprising a cap integrally formed with the upper portion.  
   
   
       22 . The collection device of  claim 21  wherein the cap is at least partially rounded.  
   
   
       23 . The collection device of  claim 17  wherein the upper portion comprises a tubular extension.  
   
   
       24 . The collection device of  claim 23  wherein the internal passage has a generally circular cross-section.  
   
   
       25 . The collection device of  claim 17  wherein the base comprises a rim configured to engage the bottom of the upper portion.  
   
   
       26 . The collection device of  claim 17  further comprising at least one external ridge at least partially along a cover member enclosing the internal passage of the upper portion.  
   
   
       27 . The collection device of  claim 26  wherein the at least one ridge comprises a plurality of ridges.  
   
   
       28 . The collection device of  claim 26  wherein the aperture is above the at least one ridge.

The collection device of  claim 17  wherein the upper portion and the base are configured to be closed in a substantially air-tight manner and the internal passage of the upper portion is long and narrow to facilitate extinguishing of smoldering debris deposited into the aperture.  
   
   
       30 . The collection device of  claim 17  wherein the internal passage is continuously tapered.  
   
   
       31 . The collection device of  claim 17  wherein the first material comprises a plastic material and the second material comprises a plastic material.

The collection device of  claim 17  wherein the first material comprises a material selected from the group consisting of plastic, polyethylene, acrylic, fiberglass, and extruded material; and wherein the second material comprises a material selected from the group consisting of plastic, polyethylene, acrylic, fiberglass, and extruded material.  
   
   
       33 . A receptacle for disposal of combustible debris comprising: 
 a base formed of a plastic material and comprising a top with an opening;    a receptacle chamber within the base; and    an upper portion comprising a cover member enclosing an internal passage and comprising a bottom with an opening;    wherein the bottom of the upper portion is mounted to the top of the base;    wherein the upper portion comprises the internal passage extending from an open first end that communicates with the base to a closed second end vertically spaced from the base, the upper portion comprising a side wall and having at least one aperture formed in the side wall, the aperture communicating with the internal passage adjacent the closed end of the internal passage;    wherein the closed second end of the upper portion comprises a throat passage extension;    wherein the upper portion comprises a plastic material formed with at least one longitudinal strip along the cover member; and    wherein the opening of the bottom of the upper portion is enlarged relative to the open first end of the internal passage of the upper portion;    so that debris that is deposited into the at least one aperture can be received in the receptacle chamber of the base.    
   
   
       34 . The receptacle of  claim 33  further comprising a removable metal liner provided within the receptacle chamber of the base to receive the debris.  
   
   
       35 . The receptacle of  claim 33  wherein the cover member comprises a tubular extension.  
   
   
       36 . The receptacle of  claim 33  wherein the closed second end of the upper portion comprises a cap member having a throat passage extension providing the side wall for the at least one aperture and a shield member providing a cap.  
   
   
       37 . The receptacle of  claim 36  wherein the internal passage of the upper portion is tapered at least from below the throat passage extension to above the open first end.  
   
   
       38 . The receptacle of  claim 36  wherein the cap member is integrally formed with the upper portion.  
   
   
       39 . The receptacle of  claim 33  wherein the at least one longitudinal strip comprises a plurality of ridges.  
   
   
       40 . The receptacle of  claim 33  wherein the upper portion is secured to the base at at least one point.  
   
   
       41 . The receptacle of  claim 33  wherein the base comprises a rim and wherein the upper portion engages the rim of the base when the upper portion is mounted to the base.

       47 . A collection device for disposal of combustible debris comprising: 
 a base formed of a first material and comprising a top with an opening;    a liner received within the base for easy removal and emptying;    an upper portion formed of a second material and comprising a bottom with an opening releasably mounted to the base, wherein the upper portion comprises a side wall and a first open end that communicates with the base to a second closed end vertically spaced from the base, wherein the upper portion further comprises an internal passage at least partially within a tubular extension having at least one longitudinal strip; and    an aperture formed in the side wall of the upper portion and communicating with the internal passage so that debris deposited in the aperture can be received within the base.    
   
   
       48 . The collection device of  claim 47  wherein the tubular extension has a generally circular cross-section.  
   
   
       49 . The collection device of  claim 47  further comprising a throat passage extension providing the side wall below the closed end.  
   
   
       50 . The collection device of  claim 47  wherein the internal passage comprises a throat passage and the upper portion comprises a throat passage extension that is enlarged relative to the throat passage.  
   
   
       51 . The collection device of  claim 50  wherein the cap is integrally formed with the upper portion and enlarged relative to the internal passage.  
   
   
       52 . The collection device of  claim 50  wherein the internal passage is continuously tapered along the throat passage.  
   
   
       53 . The collection device of  claim 47  wherein the bottom of the upper portion comprises an opening that is enlarged relative to the open second end of the internal passage of the upper portion.
