Abstract
A roofing or siding system having an improved average resulting reflectivity. The roofing and/or siding system is at least partially coated with a plurality of granules. The granules have an average reflectivity of at least about 55% and an average hardness of over about 3 Moh's.

A roofing or siding system having an average resulting reflectivity of at least about 45% comprising a roofing or siding material having an adhering surface on which granules are at least partially secured a top surface thereto, said adhering surface including asphalt, bitumen, foam, adhesive, or combinations thereof, a majority of said granules being partially embedded in said top surface of said adhering surface, said granules covering over about 95% of said top surface of said adhering surface, said granules having a generally white color and an average reflectivity of over 50%, an average hardness of over about 4 Moh's, an average opacity of at least about 60%, and an average porosity of about 0-20%, said granules comprising silicon dioxide and at least about 45 weight percent aluminum oxide such that the silicon oxide content plus the aluminum oxide content is at least about 80 weight percent of said granules and said granules having a weight percent ratio of aluminum oxide to silicon dioxide of about 0.8-10:1.
58 . The roofing or siding system as defined in claim 57 , wherein at least two different sized granules are partially embedded in said top surface of said adhering surface, said first size of granules having an average particle size that is greater than an average particle size of second sized granules, a size ratio of said first sized granules to said second sized granules is at least about 1.3:1.
59 . The roofing or siding system as defined in claim 57 , wherein said granules comprise:

A roofing or siding system having an average resulting reflectivity of at least about 45% comprising a roofing or siding material having an adhering surface on which granules are at least partially secured a top surface thereto, said adhering surface including asphalt, bitumen, foam, adhesive, or combinations thereof; a majority of said granules being partially embedded in said top surface of said adhering surface, said granules covering over about 95% of said top surface or said adhering surface, said granules having a generally white color and an average reflectivity of over 50%, an average hardness of over about 4 Moh's, an average opacity of at least about 60%, and an average porosity of about 0-20%, said granules comprising silicon dioxide and at least about 94 weight percent aluminum oxide and said granules having a weight percent ratio of aluminum oxide to silicon dioxide of about 15-8000:1.
70 . The roofing or siding system as defined in claim 69 , wherein at least two different sized granules are partially embedded in said top surface of said adhering surface, said first size of granules having an average particle size that is greater than an average particle size of second sized granules, a size ratio of said first sized granules to said second sized granules is at least about 1.3:1.
71 . The roofing or siding system as defined in claim 69 , wherein said granules comprise:

A roofing or siding system having an average resulting reflectivity of at least about 45% comprising a roofing or siding material having an adhering surface on which granules a at least partially secured atop surface thereto, said adhering surface including asphalt, bitumen, foam, adhesive, or combinations thereof, a majority of said granules being partially embedded in said top surface of said adhering surface, said granules covering over about 95% of said top surface of said adhering surface, said granules having a generally white color and an average reflectivity of over 50%, an average hardness of over about 4 Moh's, an average opacity of at least about 60%, and an average porosity of about 0-20%, a majority of said granules consisting essentially of crushed white porcelain, said crushed white porcelain including silicon dioxide and at least about 25 weight percent aluminum oxide and having a weight percent ratio of aluminum oxide to silicon dioxide of at least about 0.2:1.
82 . The roofing or siding system as defined in claim 81 , wherein at least two different sized granules are partially embedded in said top surface of said adhering surface, said first size of granules having an average particle size that is greater than an average particle size of second sized granules, a size ratio of said first sized granules to said second sized granules is at least about 1.3:1.
83 . The roofing or siding system as defined in claim 81 , wherein said crushed porcelain has a weight percent ratio of aluminum oxide to silicon dioxide of at least about 0.25-2:1 and a weight percent of aluminum oxide plus and silicon dioxide of at least about 75%.
84 . The roofing or siding system as defined in claim 82 , wherein said crushed porcelain has a weight percent ratio of aluminum oxide to silicon dioxide of at least about 0.25-2:1 and a weight percent of aluminum oxide plus and silicon dioxide of at least about 75%.
85 . The roofing or siding system as defined in claim 83 , wherein said crushed porcelain has a weight percent ratio of aluminum oxide to silicon dioxide of at least about 0.25-1:1 and a weight percent of aluminum oxide plus and silicon dioxide of at least about 85%.
86 . The roofing or siding system as defined in claim 84 , wherein said crushed porcelain has a weight percent ratio of aluminum oxide to silicon dioxide of at least about 0.25-1:1 and a weight percent of aluminum oxide plus and silicon dioxide of at least about 85%.
87 . The roofing or siding system as defined in claim 81 , wherein said granules cover over about 98% of said top surface of said adhering surface.
88 . The roofing or siding system as defined in claim 86 , wherein said granules cover over about 98% of said top surface of said adhering surface.

A roofing or siding system having an average resulting reflectivity of about 45-99% comprising a roofing or siding substrate coated with adhering material, said roofing or siding substrate including a composite fabric, said adhering material including a top surface on which a majority of granules are partially embedded in and secured thereto, said adhering material including asphalt, bitumen, or combinations thereof, said granule covering over about 95% of said top surface of said adhering material, said granules having a generally white color and an average reflectivity of over 50% and an average hardness of at least about 6 Moh's hardness, said granules comprising of silicon dioxide and at least about 45 weight percent aluminum oxide, said weight percent of said silicon dioxide content plus said weight percent of said aluminum dioxide content of said granules is at least about 74 weight percent of said granules, said granules having an average opacity of at least about 55%.
94 . The roofing or siding system as defined in claim 93 , wherein at least two different sized granules are partially embedded in said top surface of said adhering material, said first size of granules having an average particle size that is greater than an average particle size of second sized granules, a size ratio of said first sized granules to said second sized granules is at least about 1.3:1.
