Abstract
Smokable rods of cigarettes are manufactured using wrapping materials that incorporate at least one fibrous material (e.g., flax fibers, hardwood pulp fibers and/or softwood pulp fibers) at least one filler material (e.g., calcium carbonate in particulate form). The wrapping materials possess multi-layer coatings. The wrapping materials possess coatings in the form of series of spaced apart bands, each band possessing a series of layers. At least one of the coating layers can have a filler material dispersed or suspended within a film-forming material of that layer.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A wrapping material for a smoking article, the wrapping material comprising:
a base sheet possessing a major surface; and a plurality of spaced apart bands applied to the major surface, each band of the plurality of spaced apart bands including a bottom layer applied over the major surface of the base sheet, and an upper layer applied over the bottom layer; at least one of the layers comprising a filler and a film-forming material selected from the group consisting of ethylene vinyl acetate, polyvinyl acetate, and a combination thereof.
2 . The wrapping material of claim 1 , wherein each of the layers comprises calcium carbonate and ethylene vinyl acetate or polyvinyl acetate.
3 . The wrapping material of claim 1 , wherein the filler is selected from the group consisting of calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, clay, talc, aluminum oxide, mica, magnesium oxide, calcium sulfate, magnesium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide, aluminum oxide, titanium dioxide, starch, flour, particulate polyvinyl alcohol, particulate tobacco, fibrous cellulose, graphite, carbon fiber, ceramic, and particulate iron.
4 . The wrapping material of claim 1 , wherein the filler is calcium carbonate.
5 . The wrapping material of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the bottom layer or the upper layer comprises an optical brightener.
6 . The wrapping material of claim 1 , wherein the width of each of the plurality of spaced apart bands is about 0.5 mm to about 8 mm.
7 . The wrapping material of claim 1 , wherein the width of each of the plurality of spaced apart bands is about 4 mm to about 7 mm.
8 . The wrapping material of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of the spaced apart bands is a continuous band.
9 . The wrapping material of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the plurality of the spaced apart bands is a discontinuous band.
10 . A smoking article comprising the wrapping material of claim 1 .
11 . A wrapping material for a smoking article, the wrapping material comprising:
a base sheet possessing a major surface; and a plurality of spaced apart bands applied to the major; each band of the plurality of spaced apart bands including a bottom layer applied over the major surface of the base sheet, a middle layer applied over the bottom layer, and an upper layer applied over the middle layer; at least one of the layers comprising calcium carbonate and a film-forming material selected from the group consisting of ethylene vinyl acetate, polyvinyl acetate, and a combination thereof.
12 . The wrapping material of claim 11 , wherein each of the layers comprises calcium carbonate and ethylene vinyl acetate or polyvinyl acetate.
13 . The wrapping material of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the bottom layer, the middle layer, or the upper layer comprises an optical brightener.
14 . The wrapping material of claim 11 , wherein the width of each of the plurality of spaced apart bands is about 0.5 mm to about 8 mm.
15 . The wrapping material of claim 11 , wherein the width of each of the plurality of spaced apart bands is about 4 mm to about 7 mm.
16 . The wrapping material of claim 11 , wherein each of the plurality of spaced apart bands has a width of about 6 mm.
17 . The wrapping material of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the plurality of the spaced apart bands is a continuous band.
18 . The wrapping material of claim 11 , wherein at least one of the plurality of the spaced apart bands is a discontinuous band.
19 . A smoking article comprising the wrapping material of claim 11 .
20 . A smoking article comprising wrapping material and a rod of smokable material wrapped by the wrapping material, the wrapping material comprising:
a base sheet possessing a major surface; and at least one band applied to the major surface; each band including a bottom layer applied over the major surface of the base sheet and an upper layer applied over the bottom layer; each layer incorporating a filler and a film-forming material selected from the group consisting of ethylene vinyl acetate, polyvinyl acetate, and a combination thereof.
21 . The smoking article of claim 20 , further comprising a middle layer between the upper layer and the bottom layer.
22 . The smoking article of claim 20 , further comprising an overcoating.
23 . The smoking article of claim 20 , further comprising a primary coating beneath the at least one band.
24 . The smoking article of claim 20 , wherein at least a portion of the major surface and the at least one band are in contact with the smokable material.
25 . The smoking article of claim 20 , further comprising a second band spaced apart from the at least one band.
26 . The smoking article of claim 20 , wherein the at least one band is located within a central third of the length of the smoking article.Cited by (0)
