. The method according to claim 105 , further comprising the step of canceling the recording of the received data when the decoded electronic watermark information for digital data indicates recording is prohibited.

. A data output method comprising the steps of:
determining a type of destination device to which data is output; determining whether the destination device is capable of transmitting and receiving the data in a secure state; determining whether the designation device is a recording apparatus when it is determined that the destination device is capable of transmitting and receiving the data in a secure state; determining copy management information attached to the data when it is determined that the destination device is a recording apparatus; and embedding electronic watermark information in the data according to the determined copy management information.

. The method according to claim 107 , further comprising the step of embedding electronic watermark information indicating recording is prohibited when the detected copy management information indicates at least first generation recording is allowed.

. The method according to claim 107 , further comprising the steps of encrypting the data and outputting the encrypted data, and not outputting key data for decrypting the encrypted data when the detected copy management information indicates recording is prohibited.

. The method according to claim 107 , further comprising the steps of encrypting the data, and outputting key data for decrypting the encrypted data when it is determined that the destination device is a device capable of transmitting and receiving data in a secure state but is not a recording apparatus.

. The method according to claim 107 , further comprising the steps of encrypting the data and outputting the encrypted data, and not outputting key data for decrypting the encrypted data when the destination device is not a device capable of transmitting and receiving data in a secure state.

. The method according to claim 107 , further comprising the step of determining whether the destination device is capable of transmitting and receiving the data in a secure state by determining whether the destination device is compatible with an IEEE 1394 interface.
