Apparatus and method for displaying a television video signal and data in a mobile terminal according to a mode thereof

Abstract

An apparatus and method for receiving and displaying a television signal and a data signal in a mobile terminal. The mobile terminal includes a display unit with a video data display area and a user data display area. The mobile terminal determines in a standby mode whether it is set to a television mode or communication mode. If the mobile terminal is set to the television mode, it controls a tuner to select a desired television channel. The mobile terminal stores video data of a current frame received over the selected channel and user data corresponding to the selected channel in a memory unit, outputs video data of a previous frame stored in the memory unit to the video data display area of the display unit in a frame period and then outputs the user data stored in the memory unit to the user data display area of the display unit upon completing the output of the video data of the previous frame. In the communication mode, the mobile terminal stops the operation of the tuner and displays user data generated in the communication mode in the video data display area and user data display area.

1 . A method for communication by a mobile terminal having a television signal display function, the method comprising the steps of: 
 displaying a received television signal;    displaying generated data together with the television signal when data transmission is requested during displaying of the received television signal; and    transmitting the displayed data when data transmission is requested.    
   
   
       2 . The method as claimed in  claim 1 , further comprising the step of returning to the step of displaying the received television signal after the data transmission is completed.  
   
   
       3 . The method as claimed in  claim 1 , wherein, in the step of displaying the data together with the television signal, the television signal and the data are displayed on corresponding areas of a predetermined display unit.  
   
   
       4 . The method as claimed in  claim 1 , wherein, in the step of displaying the data together with the television signal, the television signal and the data are mixed and displayed in an on-screen display (OSD) manner.  
   
   
       5 . The method as claimed in  claim 1 , wherein, in the step of displaying the data together with the television signal, the television signal and the data are displayed on television and data display areas arranged in a screen of the display unit, respectively, when the screen of the display unit is in a standard screen mode, and the television signal and the data are mixed and displayed in an on-screen display (OSD) manner when the screen of the display unit is in a full screen mode.  
   
   
       6 . The method as claimed in  claim 5 , wherein the television signal is displayed on all of the screen of the display unit when the screen of the display unit is in the full screen mode.  
   
   
       7 . The method as claimed in  claim 5 , wherein the data is generated in the mobile terminal.  
   
   
       8 . The method as claimed in  claim 7 , wherein the data is a text data.  
   
   
       9 . A method for communication by a mobile terminal having a television signal display function, the method comprising the steps of: 
 displaying a received television signal;    displaying generated data while interrupting reception of the television signal, when data transmission is requested during displaying of the received television signal; and    transmitting the displayed data when data transmission is requested.    
   
   
       10 . The method as claimed in  claim 9 , further comprising the step of returning to the step of displaying the received television signal after the data transmission is completed.  
   
   
       11 . The method as claimed in  claim 10 , wherein, in the step of displaying the generated data while interrupting reception of the television signal, the generated data are displayed in an on-screen display (OSD) manner on a pre-stored background screen.  
   
   
       12 . A method for communication by a mobile terminal having a television signal display function, the method comprising the steps of: 
 displaying a received television signal;    determining a display mode when data transmission is requested during displaying of the received television signal;    displaying the television signal together with generated data when the display mode is a television display mode;    displaying the generated data while interrupting reception of the television signal when the display mode is not the television display mode; and    transmitting the displayed data when data transmission is requested.    
   
   
       13 . A method for communication by a mobile terminal having a television signal display function, the method comprising the steps of: 
 displaying a received television signal;    displaying a data while interrupting reception of the television signal when the data is received during displaying of the television signal; and    returning to the step of displaying the received television signal after displaying the data.    
   
   
       14 . A method for communication by a mobile terminal having a television signal display function, the method comprising the steps of: 
 displaying a received television signal;    determining a display mode when data is received during displaying of the received television signal;    displaying the television signal together with the received data when the display mode is a television display mode;    displaying the received data while interrupting reception of the television signal when the display mode is not the television display mode; and    returning to the step of displaying the received television signal after displaying the data.    
   
   
       15 . A method for communication by a mobile terminal having a television signal display function, the method comprising the steps of: 
 displaying a received television signal;    displaying generated data together with the television signal when data transmission is requested during displaying of the received television signal, and transmitting the displayed data when data transmission is requested; and    displaying received data together with the television signal when data reception occurs during displaying of the received television signal.    
   
   
       16 . The method as claimed in  claim 15 , further comprising the step of returning to the step of displaying the received television signal after the data transmission or data reception is completed.
