Side bearing for railway car
Abstract
A side bearing provides contact between a truck bolster and a railway car body. The side bearing includes a cage member mounted on top of the bolster. An insert member is fit within an opening in the cage member. A top member is mounted above the insert member for vertical movement relative thereto. The insert and top members have pocket sections that together form at least one pocket there between. Resilient devices, such as elastomeric unitary pieces, are positioned in each of the pockets for supporting the top member relative to the insert member. The side bearing components we configured to provide up to 0.625 inches of vertical displacement of the top member relative to the insert member.

19 . A side bearing for a railway car comprising
a base member mounted on a bolster of a railway car truck, the base member having an upwardly facing opening, an insert member received within the opening in the base member, the insert member including two raised end sections and a raised center section forming two upwardly facing pocket sections, a top member located above the base member, the top member including an upwardly facing wear surface and two downwardly extending end sections and a downwardly extending center section forming two downwardly facing pocket sections, wherein the insert member pocket section and the top member pocket section combine to form two pockets between the insert member and top member, a resilient member positioned in each pocket between the insert member and the top member, the resilient members supporting the top member at a predetermined set-up height above the base member, a first protrusion extending downwardly from within each pocket section of the top member, and the first protrusion extends into a complementary aperture in the resilient member, and wherein a second protrusion extends upwardly from within each pocket of the insert member, and the second protrusion extends into a complementary aperture in the resilient member.
