Abstract

A fire-retardant mattress that compartmentalizes bedding material between layers of fire-resistant material. The mattress includes an inner support compartment, a first layer of fire-resistant material adjacent to at least one side of the inner support compartment, at least one layer of cushioning material adjacent to the first layer of fire-resistant material, and a second layer of fire-resistant material adjacent to the at least one cushioning layer, the second layer of fire-resistant material distal to the first layer of fire-resistant material.

1 . A fire-retardant mattress comprised of: 
 an inner support compartment;    a first layer of fire-resistant material adjacent to at least one side of the inner support compartment;    at least one layer of material adjacent to the first layer of fire-resistant material; and    a second layer of fire-resistant material adjacent to the at least one layer of material, the second layer of fire-resistant material distal to the first layer of fire-resistant material.    
   
   
       2 . The fire-retardant mattress of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one layer of material adjacent to the first layer of fire-resistant material is combustible.  
   
   
       3 . The fire-retardant mattress of  claim 1 , wherein the at least one layer of material adjacent to the first layer of fire-resistant material is a cushioning material.  
   
   
       4 . The fire-retardant mattress of  claim 3 , wherein: 
 the at least one layer of cushioning material adjacent to the first layer of fire-resistant material is made of foam.    
   
   
       5 . The fire-retardant mattress of  claim 1 , wherein the inner support compartment is filled with a material selected from a group comprised of springs, air water, fiber or foam.  
   
   
       6 . The fire-retardant mattress of  claim 1 , wherein a second layer of material is located adjacent to the second layer of fire-resistant material distal to the at least one layer of material.  
   
   
       7 . The fire-retardant mattress of  claim 6 , wherein the second layer of material is a cushioning material.  
   
   
       8 . The fire-retardant mattress of  claim 7 , wherein the second layer of cushioning material is ticking.  
   
   
       9 . The fire-retardant mattress of  claim 7 , wherein the second layer of cushioning material is made of foam.  
   
   
       10 . The fire-retardant mattress of  claim 1 , wherein: 
 at least one upholstery topper layer is adjacent to the at least one side of the inner support compartment; and    the first layer of fire-resistant material is adjacent to at least one upholstery topper layer, distal to the at least one side of the inner support compartment.    
   
   
       11 . The fire-retardant mattress of  claim 1 , wherein: 
 the inner support compartment has a perimeter; and    a layer of fire-retardant material surrounds the perimeter.    
   
   
       12 . The fire-retardant mattress of  claim 1 , wherein: 
 the mattress has an outer edge; and    a pillow-top layer attached to the second layer of fire-resistant material, inboard of the outer edge of the mattress.    
   
   
       13 . The fire-retardant mattress of  claim 1 , wherein: 
 the inner support compartment has a second side opposite the at least one side;    a third layer of fire-resistant material is located adjacent to the second side of the inner support compartment;    at least one layer of material is adjacent to the third layer of fire-resistant material; and    a fourth layer of fire-resistant material is adjacent to the second layer of material distal from the third layer of fire-resistant material.    
   
   
       14 . The fire-retardant mattress of  claim 13 , wherein the at least one layer of material is a cushioning material.  
   
   
       15 . The fire-retardant mattress of  claim 1 , wherein: 
 the mattress includes at least one additional layer of combustible material secured to a top layer of the mattress;    the at least one additional layer of combustible material is joined to the top layer inboard of a perimeter of the mattress;    a second layer of fire-resistant material extends along a length of the mattress adjacent to where the at least one additional layer joins the top layer of the mattress;    at least one layer of combustible material is located adjacent to the second layer of fire-resistant material, proximal to the inner support compartment;    a first layer of fire-resistant material is located inboard of the at least one layer of combustible material between the combustible material and the inner support compartment.    
   
   
       16 . A fire-retardant mattress comprised of: 
 an inner support compartment having six sides;    a first layer of fire-retardant material adjacent to each side of the inner support compartment;    at least one layer of material adjacent to the first layer of fire-retardant material on each side of the inner support compartment; and    a second layer of fire-retardant material adjacent to the at least one layer of material on each side of the inner support compartment distal to the first layer of fire-retardant material.    
   
   
       17 . The fire-retardant mattress of  claim 16 , wherein the at least one layer of material is a cushioning material.  
   
   
       18 . The fire-retardant mattress of  claim 17 , wherein the cushioning material is foam.  
   
   
       19 . The fire-retardant mattress of  claim 16 , wherein: 
 at least one upholstery topper layer is adjacent to each side of the inner support compartment; and    the first layer of fire-retardant material is adjacent the at least one upholstery topper layer distal from the side of the inner support compartment.    
   
   
       20 . A fire-retardant mattress comprised of: 
 an inner support compartment;    a fire-resistant insulation layer having a first side and a second side, the first side adjacent to at least one side of the inner support compartment;    a first layer of material adjacent to the second side of the fire-resistant layer;    a quilt layer having a first side and a second side, the first side of the quilt layer adjacent to the first layer of material distal from the fire-resistant layer;    a second layer of material adjacent to the second side of the quilt layer;    a second fire-resistant insulation layer adjacent to the second layer of material and distal from the quilt layer; and    an outer ticking layer adjacent to the second fire-resistant layer.    
   
   
       21 . The fire-retardant mattress of  claim 20 , wherein the first and second layer of material is a cushioning material.  
   
   
       22 . The fire-retardant mattress of  claim 21 , wherein the cushioning material is foam.  
   
   
       23 . A method of manufacturing a fire-resistant mattress, the method comprising the steps of: 
 providing an inner support compartment;    placing a first layer of fire-resistant material on a first side of the inner support compartment;    positioning at least one layer of material adjacent to the first fire-resistant layer of material;    aligning a second layer of fire-resistant material on the at least one layer of combustible material distal to the first layer of fire-resistant material; and    placing a second layer of material outboard of the second layer of fire-resistant material distal to the inner support compartment.    
   
   
       24 . The method of  claim 23 , wherein the at least one layer of material and the second layer of material are combustible.  
   
   
       25 . The method of  claim 23 , wherein the at least one layer of material and the second layer of material are cushioning material.  
   
   
       26 . The method of  claim 25 , wherein the cushioning material is foam.
