Abstract
Novelty items that are combinations of articles of manufacture with fluorescent proteins are provided. These novelty items, include combinations of transgenic plants that express a luciferase or a luciferin with plant food that contains a luciferase and a luciferin.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A combination, comprising:
a transgenic fish that expresses one or more components of a bioluminescent system; and a composition that includes one or more components of a bioluminescent system, wherein introducing the composition to the transgenic fish causes the transgenic fish to illuminate.
. The combination of claim 1 , wherein the transgenic fish is an ornamental fish.
. The combination of claim 1 , wherein the transgenic fish is a fishing lure or bait.
. The combination of claim 1 , wherein the transgenic fish is substantially translucent.
. The combination of claim 1 , wherein the transgenic fish is substantially transparent.
. The combination of claim 1 , wherein the transgenic fish has cells and expresses one or more components of a bioluminescent system on the surfaces of the cells.
. The combination of claim 1 , wherein the transgenic fish has mouth and a digestive system and expresses one or more components of a bioluminescent system on at least one of: the mouth or digestive system.
. The combination of claim 1 , wherein the components of a bioluminescent system comprise at least one of the following: luciferase, luciferin, and fluorescent protein.
. The combination of claim 8 , wherein the luciferase or luciferin is a Renilla luciferase or luciferin.
. The combination of claim 8 , wherein the luciferase or luciferin is a Vargula luciferase or luciferin.
. The combination of claim 8 , wherein the fluorescent protein is a green fluorescent protein.
. The combination of claim 11 , wherein the green fluorescent protein is derived from the Aequorea fluorescent protein.
. The combination of claim 11 , wherein the green fluorescent protein is derived from the Renilla fluorescent protein.
. The combination of claim 8 , wherein the fluorescent protein is a blue fluorescent protein.
. The combination of claim 14 , wherein the blue fluorescent protein is derived from Vibrio species fluorescent protein.
. The combination of claim 1 , wherein the components of the bioluminescent system are derived from bacterial, fungal, insect, invertebrate or vertebrate bioluminescent systems.
. The combination of claim 1 , wherein the transgenic fish emits sufficient illumination to be viewed by the unassisted eye.
. The combination of claim 1 , wherein the transgenic fish emits illumination of a plurality of colors.
. The combination of claim 1 , wherein the composition is a fish food.
. The combination of claim 1 , wherein ingestion of the fish food by the fish causes the fish to illuminate.
. The combination of claim 1 , wherein the transgenic fish is contained in water and the composition can be added directly to the water.
. A transgenic fish that expresses at least one component of a bioluminescent system.
. The transgenic fish of claim 22 , wherein the transgenic fish is an ornamental fish.
. The transgenic fish of claim 22 , wherein the transgenic fish is a fishing lure or bait.
. The transgenic fish of clam 22 , wherein the transgenic fish is substantially translucent.
. The transgenic fish of claim 22 , wherein the transgenic fish is substantially transparent.
. The transgenic fish of claim 22 , wherein the transgenic fish has cells and expresses one or more components of a bioluminescent system on the surfaces of the cells.
. The transgenic fish of claim 22 , wherein the transgenic fish has a mouth and a digestive system and expresses one or more components of a bioluminescent system on at least one of the mouth or digestive system.
. The transgenic fish of claim 22 , wherein the components of a bioluminescent system comprise at least one of the following: luciferase, luciferin, and fluorescent protein.
. The transgenic fish of claim 22 , wherein the components of the bioluminescent system are derived from bacterial, fungal, insect, invertebrate of vertebrate bioluminescent systems.
. The transgenic fish of claim 22 , wherein the transgenic fish emits sufficient illumination to be viewed by the unassisted eye.
. The transgenic fish of claim 22 , wherein the transgenic fish emits illumination of a plurality of colors.
. A fish food that includes one or more components of a bioluminescent generating system.
. The fish food of claim 33 , wherein the components of a bioluminescent generating system comprise at least one of: luciferase, luciferin, or fluorescent protein.
. The fish food of claim 33 , wherein the luciferase or luciferin comprises from about 1 part per million to about 1 part per 10 weight/weight.
. The fish food of claim 33 , wherein the luciferase or luciferin is in lyophilized form.
. A transgenic fish egg that expresses one or more components of a bioluminescent system.
. A method of making a transgenic fish emit illuminate, comprising:
providing a transgenic fish that expresses one or more components of a bioluminescent system; and contacting the transgenic fish with a composition that comprises one or more components of a bioluminescent system, wherein contacting the transgenic fish with the composition causes the transgenic fish to illuminate.
. The method of claim 38 , wherein the composition is a fish food.
. The method of claim 38 , wherein the contacting the transgenic fish with a composition is consumption by the fish of the composition.
. A method of producing a transgenic fish, comprising:
providing fish eggs; and transfecting the eggs with at least one luciferase or luciferin.
. The method of claim 41 , wherein the eggs further comprise DNA endoding a membrane-spanning protein, and transfecting the eggs further includes incorporating one or more components of a bioluminescent system into the DNA encoding a membrane-spanning protein.
