Abstract
The invention provides methods and compositions related to transgenic plants which incorporate genetic traits of the marine eelgrass Zostera marina . These traits include pathogen resistance, which may be conferred by stimulating zosteric acid biosynthesis, and root anoxia resistance, which may be conferred by introducing one or more anoxia-induced or anoxia-resistance genes.

An isolated nucleic acid which hybridizes under stringent conditions including a wash step in 0.2×SSC at 65° C. to a nucleic acid consisting of the nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 35, SEQ ID NO: 41, or SEQ ID NO: 46, wherein the isolated nucleic acid encodes a protein having alcohol dehydrogenase, cinnamate 4-hydroxylase, or phenylalanine ammonia lyase activity, respectively.
22 . An isolated nucleic acid encoding a polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence having at least 95% identity with SEQ ID NO: 36, SEQ ID NO: 42, or SEQ ID NO: 47, wherein the polypeptide has alcohol dehydrogenase, cinnamate 4-hydroxylase, or phenylalanine ammonia lyase activity, respectively.
23 . The isolated nucleic acid of claim 22 , encoding a polypeptide comprising the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 36, SEQ ID NO: 42, or SEQ ID NO: 47.
24 . The isolated nucleic acid of claim 22 , encoding a polypeptide consisting of the amino acid sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 36, SEQ ID NO: 42, or SEQ ID NO: 47.
25 . The isolated nucleic acid of claim 21 , wherein the nucleic acid comprises the nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 35, SEQ ID NO: 41, or SEQ ID NO: 46.
26 . The isolated nucleic acid of claim 21 consisting of the nucleotide sequence set forth in SEQ ID NO: 35, SEQ ID NO: 41, or SEQ ID NO: 46.
