Abstract

In crude oil fractions, fossil fuels, and organic liquids in general in which it is desirable to reduce the levels of sulfur-containing and nitrogen-containing components, the process reduces the level of these compounds via the application of sonic energy. The process can be performed both with and without the added presence of an oxidizing agent, and with or without elevated temperature and/or pressure. The invention is performed either as a continuous process or a batch process.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 - 49 . (canceled)

50 . A process for removing organic sulfur from a crude oil fraction, said process comprising:
 (a) exposing crude oil to sonic energy in the absence of hydrogen peroxide or hydroperoxides, also in the absence of a metallic catalyst, and deriving a crude oil fraction; and (b) contacting said crude oil fraction derived in step (a) with hydrogen gas under conditions causing conversion of said organic sulfur originally present in said crude oil to hydrogen sulfide by hydrodesulfurization.

51 . The process of claim 50 wherein said crude oil fraction is a fraction boiling within the diesel range.

52 . The process of claim 51 wherein said crude oil fraction is a member selected from the group consisting of fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) cycle oil fractions, coker distillate fractions, straight run diesel fractions, and blends thereof.

53 . The process of claim 50 wherein said crude oil fraction is a fraction boiling within the gas oil range.

54 . The process of claim 53 wherein said crude oil fraction is a member selected form the group consisting of FCC cycle oil, FCC slurry oil, light gas oil, heavy gas oil, and coker gas oil.

55 . The process of claim 50 wherein in step (a) said crude oil is exposed to said sonic energy in the absence of an aqueous phase having a surface active agent.

56 . A process for removing organic sulfur from a crude oil fraction, said process comprising:
 (a) exposing the crude oil fraction to sonic energy in the absence of an aqueous phase; and (b) contacting said crude oil fraction exposed to sonic energy in step (a) with hydrogen gas under conditions causing conversion of said organic sulfur originally present in said crude oil fraction to hydrogen sulfide by hydrodesulfurization.

57 . The process of claim 56 wherein said crude oil fraction is a fraction boiling within the diesel range.

58 . The process of claim 57 wherein said crude oil fraction is a member selected from the group consisting of fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) cycle oil fractions, coker distillate fractions, straight run diesel fractions, and blends thereof.

59 . The process of claim 56 wherein said crude oil fraction is a fraction boiling within the gas oil range.

60 . The process of claim 59 wherein said crude oil fraction is a member selected form the group consisting of FCC cycle oil, FCC slurry oil, light gas oil, heavy gas oil, and coker gas oil.

61 . A process for removing organic sulfur from a crude oil fraction, said process comprising:
 (a) exposing the crude oil fraction to sonic energy in the absence of a surface active agent; and (b) contacting said crude oil fraction exposed to sonic energy in step (a) with hydrogen gas under conditions causing conversion of said organic sulfur originally present in said crude oil fraction to hydrogen sulfide by hydrodesulfurization.

62 . The process of claim 61 wherein said crude oil fraction is a fraction boiling within the diesel range.

63 . The process of claim 62 wherein said crude oil fraction is a member selected from the group consisting of fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) cycle oil fractions, coker distillate fractions, straight run diesel fractions, and blends thereof.

64 . The process of claim 61 wherein said crude oil fraction is a fraction boiling within the gas oil range.

65 . The process of claim 64 wherein said crude oil fraction is a member selected form the group consisting of FCC cycle oil, FCC slurry oil, light gas oil, heavy gas oil, and coker gas oil.
