A tampon having a relatively high density, compressed core and a plurality of lower density longitudinal ribs and a soft outer surface.

A tampon, especially for feminine hygiene of high buckling strength comprising a relatively high density compressed fiber core and an outer layer comprising a plurality of lower density longitudinal fiber ribs extending radially outward therefrom to provide a soft outer surface of the tampon.  
   
   
       6 . The tampon of claim  1 , wherein the fiber core and fiber ribs are comprised of natural fibers.  
   
   
       7 . The tampon of claim  1 , wherein the fiber core and fiber ribs are comprised of synthetic fibers.  
   
   
       8 . The tampon of claim  1 , wherein the fiber core and fiber ribs are comprised of a mixture of natural and synthetic fibers.
