Abstract

A display device mounted on an outside device includes a first display panel, a second display panel, a data driver applying a tone voltage through a common data line, and a scan driver applying a scan signal to the first and second display panels through a scan line for each of the first and second display panels. The display device selects a first display mode or a second display mode in accordance with an instruction from the outside device. The first display mode provides that the first display panel indicates a display state and the second display panel indicates a non-display state, and the second display mode provides that the first display panel indicates the non-display state and the second display panel indicates the display state.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A display device mounted on an outside device, comprising:
a first display panel; a second display panel; a data driver applying a tone voltage in response to display data from the outside device to the first and second display panels through a common data line for the first and second display panels; and a scan driver applying a scan signal to the first and second display panels through a scan line for each of the first and second display panels; wherein the display device selects one of a first display mode and a second display mode in accordance with an instruction from the outside device, the first display mode provides that the first display panel indicates a display state and the second display panel indicates a non-display state, and the second display mode provides that the first display panel indicates the non-display state and the second display panel indicates the display state; and wherein whether the first display mode or the second display mode is selected is determined by the outside device in response to a state of the outside device.

2 . The display device according to claim 1 , wherein the outside device is a collapsible portable cell telephone, and the outside device selects the second display mode when the portable telephone is collapsed.

3 . The display device according to claim 1 , wherein in a case of the first display mode, the first display panel displays display data from the outside device and the second display panel displays data regardless of the display data from the outside device.

4 . The display device according to claim 3 , wherein in a case of the first display mode, the first display panel displays the display data from the outside device during a first period when the first display panel is scanned by the scan driver, and the second display panel displays the data regardless of the display data from the outside device during a second period when the second display panel is scanned by the scan driver.

5 . The display device according to claim 4 , wherein the second period of time is a retrace period of the display data.

6 . The display device according to claim 1 , wherein in the case of the first display mode, the data driver applies the tone voltage in response to the display data to the common data line when the scan driver scans the first display panel, and applies a voltage regardless of the tone voltage in response to the display data to the common data line when the scan driver scans the second display panel.

7 . The display device according to claim 6 , wherein in the case of the first display mode, the scan driver scans the second display panel during a retrace period of the display data, and in the case of the first display mode, the data driver applies the voltage regardless of the tone voltage in response to the display data during the retrace period of the display data.

8 . The display device according to claim 6 , wherein the voltage regardless of the tone voltage in response to the display data is a predetermined voltage.

9 . The display device according to claim 1 , wherein a size of the first display panel is larger than a size of the second display panel.

10 . A display device mounted on a collapsible portable telephone, comprising:
a main display panel; a sub display panel; a data driver applying a tone voltage in response to display data from the outside device to the main and sub display panels through a common data line for the main and sub display panels; and a scan driver applying a scan signal to the main and sub display panels through a scan line for each of the main and sub display panels; wherein the display device selects one of a main display mode and a sub display mode in accordance with an instruction from the portable telephone, the main display mode provides that the main display panel indicates a display state and the sub display panel indicates a non-display state, and the sub display mode provides that the main display panel indicates the non-display state and the sub display panel indicates the display state; and wherein the sub display mode is selected when the portable telephone is collapsed.
