Claims

Abstract

There is disclosed a composition including a boron-containing compound, and at least one of a sulfur-containing, phosphorus-containing compound and its salt. Methods of making and using the composition are also disclosed.

1 . A lubricant composition comprising: 
 a boron-containing compound; and    at least one of a sulfur-containing, phosphorus-containing compound and its salt.    
     
     
         2 . The composition of  claim 1 , further comprising a base oil.  
     
     
         3 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the boron-containing compound is present in the composition in an amount to provide from about 5 ppm to about 500 ppm boron.  
     
     
         4 . The composition of  claim 3 , wherein the boron-containing compound is present in the composition in an amount to provide from about 11 ppm to about 100 ppm boron.  
     
     
         5 . The composition of  claim 2 , wherein the base oil is at least one of mineral, and synthetic.  
     
     
         6 . The composition of  claim 5 , wherein the base oil is a polyalphaolefin.  
     
     
         7 . The composition of  claim 5 , wherein the base oil is a mixture of mineral and synthetic.  
     
     
         8 . The composition of  claim 5 , wherein the base oil is a gas-to-liquid oil.  
     
     
         9 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the boron-containing compound is a borated nitrogen-containing compound.  
     
     
         10 . The composition of  claim 9 , wherein the borated nitrogen-containing compound is a borated succinimide dispersant.  
     
     
         11 . The composition of  claim 10 , wherein the dispersant is derived from polyisobutylene.  
     
     
         12 . The composition of  claim 11 , wherein the polyisobutylene has a molecular weight of about 1300.  
     
     
         13 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the boron-containing compound is a borated phosphorus-containing compound.  
     
     
         14 . The composition of  claim 13 , wherein the borated phosphorus-containing compound is a dispersant.  
     
     
         15 . The composition of  claim 14 , wherein the phosphorus-containing compound is a phosphorus acid.  
     
     
         16 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the sulfur-containing, phosphorus-containing compound is a compound of formula (II):  
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
         wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 , and R 6  are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, cyano, and hydrocarbyl groups comprising from about 1 to about 30 carbon atoms.  
       
     
     
         17 . The composition of  claim 16 , wherein R 1  and R 2  are methyl, and R 3 , R 4 , R 5 , and R 6  are hydrogen.  
     
     
         18 . The composition of  claim 1 , wherein the salt of the sulfur-containing, phosphorus-containing compound is a compound of formula (III):  
       
         
           
           
               
               
           
         
         wherein R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 , R 5 , R 6 , R 7 , R 8 , and R 9  are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, cyano, and hydrocarbyl groups comprising from about 1 to about 30 carbon atoms.  
       
     
     
         19 . The composition of  claim 18 , wherein R 1  and R 2  are methyl, and R 3 , R 4 , R 5 , R 6 , R 7  and R 8  are hydrogen, and R 9  is a tertiary C 12-14  alkyl group.  
     
     
         20 . A method of lubricating an automotive gear comprising using as the lubricant the lubricant composition of  claim 1 .  
     
     
         21 . A method of improving antiwear protection in an automotive gear comprising placing a lubricant composition according to  claim 1  in the automotive gear.  
     
     
         22 . A method of improving thermal stability in an automotive gear comprising placing a lubricant composition according to  claim 1  in the automotive gear.  
     
     
         23 . A method of lubricating an axle comprising using as the lubricant the lubricant composition of  claim 1 .  
     
     
         24 . A method of improving antiwear protection in an axle comprising placing a lubricant composition according to  claim 1  in the axle.  
     
     
         25 . A method of improving thermal stability in an axle comprising placing a lubricant composition according to  claim 1  in the axle.  
     
     
         26 . A method of lubricating a stationary gearbox comprising using as the lubricant the lubricant composition of  claim 1 .  
     
     
         27 . A method of improving antiwear protection in a stationary gearbox comprising placing a lubricant composition according to  claim 1  in the stationary gearbox.  
     
     
         28 . A method of improving thermal stability in a stationary gearbox comprising placing a lubricant composition according to  claim 1  in the stationary gearbox.  
     
     
         29 . A method of passing ASTM D5704 comprising lubricating a gear with a lubricant composition according to  claim 1 .  
     
     
         30 . A method of passing ASTM D5704 for at least about 300 hours comprising lubricating a gear with a lubricant composition according to  claim 1 .  
     
     
         31 . A method of maintaining GL-5 and/or SAE J2360 performance comprising lubricating a gear with a lubricant composition according to  claim 1 .  
     
     
         32 . A lubricant composition comprising a boron-containing compound and a reaction product of a sulfur-containing compound, a phosphorus-containing compound, and a nitrogen-containing compound.  
     
     
         33 . A method of making a lubricant composition comprising blending a boron-containing compound and at least one of a sulfur-containing, phosphorus-containing compound and its salt.
