Abstract

A system and a method are provided for managing network activation with a carrier and registration with a service provider. In one example, the method determines a network activation status. If the network is not activated, a utility is used to perform the activation. Further, the status of registration with a provider is determined. If not registered, a request is sent to a server of the service provider for a registration file configured to gather user registration information. The registration file is then received from the server. The registration file is executed on the personal computer. Data gathered by the registration file is then returned to the service provider's server to complete the registration procedures.

Claims

.- 29 . (canceled)

. A mobile computing device, comprising:
a radio device configured to provide connectivity with a wireless network; and a processing device configured to provide account registration of the mobile computing device with a plurality of servers, to register the mobile computing device with at least one of the plurality of servers, and to utilize a wireless service provided by the at least one server.

. The mobile computing device of claim 30 , wherein the processing device comprises a generic driver device configured to perform tasks required to obtain an account with each of the plurality of servers.

. The mobile computing device of claim 30 , wherein the processing device further comprises a plug-in device configured to assist in establishing registration with the at least one server.

. The mobile computing device of claim 30 , wherein the wireless service comprises a wireless e-mail retrieval service.

. The mobile computing device of claim 30 , wherein the processing device is configured to download a registration file from the at least one server, wherein the registration file is configured to gather registration information from a user.

. The mobile computing device of claim 30 , wherein the processing device is configured to encrypt communications with the at least one server.

. The mobile computing device of claim 30 , wherein the processing device is configured to store registration information from each of the plurality of servers in a memory.

. The mobile computing device of claim 30 , wherein each of the plurality of servers is associated with a particular service provider.

. The mobile computing device of claim 30 , wherein the mobile computing device is a personal digital assistant.

. A system for providing wireless services, comprising:
a server configured to communicate over a plurality of different carrier networks with a plurality of mobile devices and to provide wireless services from a service provider to the plurality of mobile devices.

. The system of claim 39 , wherein the server is configured to receive registration information from at least of the plurality of mobile devices and to create an account for providing wireless services to the at least one mobile device.

. The system of claim 40 , wherein the server is configured to communicate with the at least one mobile device using a hypertext transfer protocol.

. The system of claim 39 , wherein the plurality of different carrier networks are the same network type.

. The system of claim 39 , wherein the plurality of different carrier networks are different network types.

. The system of claim 39 , wherein the plurality of mobile devices comprise a plurality of personal digital assistants.

. A mobile computing device, comprising:
a display; a radio device configured to provide connectivity with a wireless network; and a processing device configured to provide a screen on the display to collect a user registration data and to send the user registration data wirelessly via the wireless network to a server computer to register the user for a wireless service from a service provider.

. The mobile computing device of claim 45 , wherein the processing device is configured to display a rate plan to the user.

. The mobile computing device of claim 45 , wherein the processing device is configured to communicate with the server computer using a hypertext transfer protocol.

. The mobile computing device of claim 45 , wherein prior to providing the screen to collect a user registration data, the processing device is configured to determine whether the mobile computing device is registered with the service provider.

. The mobile computing device of claim 45 , wherein the processing device is configured to display a dialog on the display to query the user if an account is to be set up with the service provider.

. The mobile computing device of claim 45 , wherein the processing device is configured to query the user for an e-mail address to use with registration.

. The mobile computing device of claim 45 , wherein the processing device is configured to receive a user identification from the server computer based on the sent user registration data.

. The mobile computing device of claim 45 , wherein the mobile computing device is a personal digital assistant.
