Abstract

A method and apparatus to transmit data between a communication network and a mobile station just before prior to the mobile station switching from a fast data rate mode, such as digital mode, to a slow data rate mode, such as analog mode. The mobile station requests or the communication network transmits data prior to the mobile station entering the slow data rate mode, therefore eliminating the need to transmit data over a slow data rate mode, such as analog mode.

1 . A method in a mobile wireless communication station operating in a first data rate mode and a second data rate mode, comprising: 
 predicting when the mobile wireless communication station transitions between the first data rate mode and the second data rate mode;    requesting data from a network prior to transitioning between the first data rate mode and the second data rate mode wherein said first data rate mode includes a higher data rate than said second data rate mode; and    receiving data from the network, at said higher data rate via said first data rate mode prior to the mobile wireless communication station transitioning between the first data rate mode and the second data rate mode in response to the request.

       3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the first data rate mode is digital mode and the second data rate mode is analog mode, further comprising: 
 requesting the data from a cellular communication network.    
   
   
       4 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the first data rate mode is digital mode and the second data rate mode is analog mode, further comprising: 
 requesting the data from a satellite communication network.    
   
   
       5 . The method of  claim 3 , further comprising: 
 requesting Global Positioning Satellite system data from the cellular communication network.    
   
   
       6 . The method of  claim 5 , further comprising: 
 requesting ephemeris data from the cellular communication network.    
   
   
       7 . A mobile wireless communication station that operates in a first data rate mode and second data rate mode, comprising: 
 a processor, for predicting when the mobile wireless communication station transitions between the first data rate mode and the second data rate mode wherein said first data rate mode includes a higher data rate than said second data rate mode;    a transmitter coupled to said processor, the transmitter for transmitting data before the mobile wireless communication station transitions between the first data rate mode and the second data rate mode;    at least one receiver for receiving data from a network at said higher data rate via said first data rate mode, before transitioning, said receiver coupled to said processor; and    a memory for storing the data from said network before transitioning, coupled to said processor.

The mobile wireless communication station of  claim 7 , further comprising: a means for requesting data from a cellular communication network prior to the mobile communication station transitioning between a first data rate mode and a second data rate mode, coupled to said processor.

The mobile wireless communication station of  claim 7 , further comprising: a means for requesting data from a satellite communication network prior to the mobile communication station transitioning between a first data rate mode and a second data rate mode, coupled to said processor.  
   
   
       12 . The mobile wireless communication station of  claim 10 , further comprising: a means for requesting Global Positioning Satellite system data from the cellular communication network before transitioning, coupled to said processor.

       16 . A method in a network that operates in a first data rate mode and a second data rate mode, comprising: 
 predicting when a mobile wireless communication station transitions between the first data rate mode and the second data rate mode wherein said first data rate mode includes a higher data rate than said second data rate mode; and    transmitting data at said higher data rate via said first data rate mode from the network prior to the mobile wireless communication station transitioning between said first data rate mode and said second data rate mode.

The method of  claim 16 , wherein the first data rate mode is digital mode and the second data rate mode is analog mode, and wherein transmitting data from the network further includes transmitting data from a cellular communication network to the mobile wireless communication station before transitioning.

The method of  claim 16 , wherein the first data rate mode is digital mode and the second data rate mode is analog mode, and wherein transmitting data from the network further includes transmitting data from a satellite communication network to the mobile wireless communication station before transitioning.

The method of  claim 17 , wherein the first data rate mode is digital mode and the second data rate mode is analog mode, and wherein transmitting data from the network further includes transmitting Global Positioning Satellite system data to the mobile wireless communication station before transitioning.
