Abstract
A system for processing text captured from rendered documents is described. The system receives a sequence of one or more words optically or acoustically captured from a rendered document by a user. The system identifies an electronic version of the rendered document and associated an action. The system then performs the associated action with respect to the user.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A method in a computing system for responding to a capture of text, comprising:
receiving a sequence of one or more words optically or acoustically captured from a rendered document by a user; identifying an electronic version of the rendered document based on the captured text; selecting an advertising message based upon content of the identified electronic version of the rendered document; and presenting the selected advertising message to the user.
2 . The method of claim 1 wherein the rendered document is sponsored by a third party.
3 . The method of claim 1 wherein presenting the advertising message to the user includes presenting the advertising message within a copy of the electronic version of the rendered document.
4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:
generating a keyword in response to identifying the electronic version of the rendered document, wherein the keyword is derived from an analysis of the electronic version; wherein the selecting is based on the generated keyword.
5 . The method of claim 1 wherein the selecting is based at least in part upon the type of the rendered document.
6 . The method of claim 1 wherein the selecting is based at least in part upon the source of the rendered document.
7 . The method of claim 1 wherein the selecting is based at least in part upon attributes of the user.
8 . The method of claim 1 wherein the selecting is based at least in part upon the identity of the user.
9 . The method of claim 1 wherein the selecting is based at least in part upon the location of the user.
10 . The method of claim 1 wherein the selecting is based at least in part upon a group of people of which the user is a member.
11 . The method of claim 1 wherein the advertising message was associated with the identified electronic version of the rendered document after the rendered document was authored.
12 . The method of claim 1 wherein the advertising message was associated with the identified electronic version after the rendered document was rendered.
13 . The method of claim 1 wherein the action is associated with the identified electronic version of the rendered document for only the rendered document.
14 . The method of claim 1 wherein selecting an advertising messages further comprises:
analyzing the content of the identified electronic version of the rendered document using a word frequency analysis, an inverse document frequency analysis, a lexical and semantic analysis, or document summarization techniques.
15 . The method of claim 1 wherein the advertising message is selected based upon content that does not include the captured sequence of one or more words.
16 . A system for responding to the capture of text from a rendered document, comprising:
a receiving component that receives a sequence of captured text from a rendered document; an identification component that identifies an electronic version of the rendered document containing the captured text; a content analysis component that analyzes the content of the identified electronic version; and a selection component that selects an advertisement based upon the content analysis.
17 . The system of claim 16 wherein the content analysis is one or more of a word frequency analysis, an inverse document frequency analysis, a lexical and semantic analysis, or document summarization techniques.
18 . The system of claim 16 wherein the content analysis includes analyzing a type of the rendered document, a source of the rendered document, or a position of the captured text within the rendered document.
19 . The system of claim 16 wherein the content analysis includes analyzing an identity of a user of the system, a location of the user, or a group of people of which the user is a member.
20 . The system of claim 16 , the content analysis component further comprising:
a keyword generating component that generates one or more keywords to be associated with the identified electronic version.
21 . One or more computer memories collectively containing a data structure, the data structure connecting an electronic version of a rendered document to an advertisement, the data structure comprising an electronic version of the rendered document, the electronic version being selected based on a determination that the electronic version contains a user captured text sequence, and an advertisement, the advertisement being selected based in part upon an analysis of the content of the electronic version.
22 . A method for displaying a selected advertisement to a user, comprising:
receiving data indicating a sequence of text from a rendered document; analyzing the received data to identify an electronic counterpart to the rendered document; processing at least a portion of content of the identified electronic counterpart to associate one or more advertisements to the electronic counterpart; and presenting one or more of the associated advertisements to the user.
23 . The method of claim 22 wherein the processing includes selecting one of the associated advertisements based upon context information related to the rendered document, and presenting the selected associated advertisement to the user.
24 . The method of claim 22 wherein the processing includes selecting one of the associated advertisements based upon context information related to the user.
25 . The method of claim 22 wherein the processing includes determining a keyword to represent the content of the electronic counterpart and associating one or more advertisements to the keyword.
26 . The method of claim 22 wherein the presenting includes presenting an advertisement within the electronic counterpart.
27 . The method of claim 22 wherein the presenting includes presenting an advertisement at a display device associated with the user.
28 . The method of claim 22 , further comprising:
retrieving an image being displayed on a dynamic display device; and performing optical character recognition on the retrieved image to obtain the sequence of text indicated by the received data.
29 . A computer-readable medium whose contents cause a computing system to perform a method for displaying advertising messages, comprising:
retrieving an image being displayed on a distinguished dynamic display device; performing optical character recognition on the retrieved image to obtain a sequence of text; identifying an advertising message associated with at least a portion of the obtained sequence of text; and displaying the identified advertising message.
30 . The computer-readable medium of claim 29 wherein the identified advertising message is displayed on the distinguished dynamic display device.
31 . The computer-readable medium of claim 29 wherein the identified advertising message is displayed on a dynamic display device other than the distinguished dynamic display device that is viewable by a user of the computing system.Cited by (0)
