Magnetic head having a hexagonal write pole tip

Abstract

A magnetic head is disclosed which includes a hexagonal write head pole tip, having a P3 pole tip having a rectangular portion in which the track width is established, and a beveled portion having beveled wall portions. Also disclosed is a disk drive having a magnetic head having a hexagonal pole tip.

1 . A magnetic head including a hexagonal write head pole tip, comprising: 
 a P3 pole tip having a rectangular portion in which the track width is established, and a beveled portion having beveled wall portions.    
   
   
       2 . The magnetic head of  claim 1 , wherein: 
 said beveled wall portions have a bevel angle which is in the range of 6-15 degrees from normal.    
   
   
       3 . The magnetic head of  claim 1 , wherein: 
 said beveled portion is formed by ion milling.    
   
   
       4 . The magnetic head of  claim 1 , wherein: 
 said P3 pole tip includes a cap layer.    
   
   
       5 . The magnetic head of  claim 1 , wherein: 
 said P3 pole tip is encapsulated in insulating material.    
   
   
       6 . A disk drive comprising: 
 at least one hard disk;    at least one magnetic head adapted to fly over said hard disk for reading data from said hard disk, said magnetic head including a perpendicular write head having a hexagonal pole tip, including:    a P3 pole tip having a rectangular portion in which the track width is established, and a beveled portion having beveled wall portions.    
   
   
       7 . The disk drive of  claim 6 , wherein: 
 said beveled wall portions have a bevel angle which is in the range of 6-15 degrees from normal.    
   
   
       8 . The disk drive of  claim 6 , wherein: 
 said beveled portion is formed by ion milling.    
   
   
       9 . The disk drive of  claim 6 , wherein: 
 said P3 pole tip includes a cap layer.    
   
   
       10 . The disk drive of  claim 6 , wherein: 
 said P3 pole tip is encapsulated in insulating material.
