Abstract
A textured surface and oxidation layer coating on a metallic material is accomplished through the chemical and/or electrochemical etching of the surface to modify the surface texture and an in-situ oxidation procedure. The surface is useful for the fabrication of prosthetic devices, particularly medical implants, due to the corrosion and wear resistance imparted by the oxidation layer and the ability to enhance grafting of the implant onto bone imparted by the surface texture.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 - 47 . (canceled)
48 . A medical implant for implantation, said implant comprising:
a component comprising a metallic substrate, said metallic substrate comprising:
a texture-modified surface on at a least a portion of said metallic substrate, said texture-modified surface having a roughness of R max of about 0.4 mm or greater, and wherein at least a portion of the texture-modified surface comprises a diffusion hardened oxidation layer.
49 . The medical implant of claim 48 , wherein said metallic substrate comprises zirconium or zirconium alloy and wherein said diffusion hardened oxidation layer is a blue-black or black oxidized zirconium coating.
50 . The medical implant of claim 49 , wherein said diffusion hardened oxidation layer has a thickness of up to about 20 microns.
51 . The medical implant of claim 49 , wherein said diffusion hardened oxidation layer has a thickness of up to about 10 microns.
52 . The medical implant of claim 48 , wherein the texture-modified surface is a chemically textured modified surface.
53 . The medical implant of claim 48 , wherein the texture-modified surface is a mechanically textured modified surface.
54 . The medical implant of claim 48 , wherein said medical implant is a hip prosthesis.
55 . The medical implant of claim 54 , wherein the component comprising a metallic substrate comprises a hip joint stem and a femoral head, and wherein said hip prosthesis further comprises a second component, said second component comprising an acetabular cup.
56 . The medical implant of claim 55 , wherein said acetabular cup comprises an inner lining, said inner lining comprising an organic polymer or a polymer-based composite.
57 . The medical implant of claim 48 , wherein said medical implant is a knee prosthesis.
58 . The medical implant of claim 57 , wherein the component comprising a metallic substrate comprises a femoral component, and wherein said knee prosthesis further comprises a second component, said second component comprising a tibial component.
59 . The medical implant of claim 58 , wherein said tibial component comprises an organic polymer or polymer based composite.
60 . The medical implant of claim 48 , wherein said medical implant is a spine, shoulder, elbow, or finger prosthesis.
61 . The medical implant of claim 48 , wherein said medical implant comprises a bone plate or bone screw.
62 . The medical implant of claim 61 , further comprising a self-grafting device.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
