Abstract

A geographic-based communications service system has a mobile unit for transmitting/receiving information, and access points connected to a network. The access points are arranged in a known geographic locations and transmit and receive information from the mobile unit. When one of the access points detects the presence of the mobile unit, it sends a signal to the network indicating the location of the mobile unit and the information requested by the mobile unit. Based on the signal received from the access point, the network communicates with information providers connected to the network and provides data to the mobile unit through the access point corresponding to the location of the mobile unit.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A wireless communication device comprising:
a wireless receiver configured to receive information over a wireless communication link, wherein the wireless receiver is operable to communicate over the wireless communication link with a wireless access point coupled to a network; a time clock; and computing logic configured to update the time clock to provide a time corresponding to time in a time zone in which said wireless communication device is located, wherein the time zone is indicated by the information.

2 . The device of claim 1 , wherein a location of said wireless communication device is determined in accordance with the known location of a wireless access point wirelessly communicating with the wireless receiver.

3 . The device of claim 1 , wherein said computer logic is configured to update a schedule to correspond to the time in the time zone where the wireless communication device is located.

4 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising a memory associated with the wireless communication device, wherein the memory is configured to receive the known location of a wireless access point wirelessly communicating with the wireless receiver, thereby advising the wireless communication device of its location.

5 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the computing logic comprises a processor.

6 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the computing logic comprises a processor and a memory, wherein the memory stores program instructions which are executable by the processor to:
in response to receiving the time zone, adjust the time clock to provide a time corresponding to time in the received time zone in which said wireless communication device is located.

7 . A method of operating a wireless communication device, comprising:
receiving a time zone where the wireless communication device is located, wherein the wireless communication device is configured to receive information over a wireless communication link from a wireless access point coupled to a network, wherein the information indicates the time zone; and in response to receiving the time zone, adjusting the time clock to provide a time corresponding to time in the received time zone in which said wireless communication device is located.

8 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising receiving the known location of a wireless access point wirelessly communicating with the wireless communication device, thereby advising the wireless communication device of its location.

9 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising determining the location of the wireless communication device in accordance with the known location of a wireless access point wirelessly communicating with the wireless communication device.

10 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising updating a schedule to correspond to the time in the time zone where the wireless communication device is located.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the schedule is contained in a memory of the wireless communication device.

12 . A program product comprising a machine-readable medium including program logic therein that when executed perform the functions of:
receiving a time zone where the wireless communication device is located, wherein the wireless communication device is configured to receive information over a wireless communication link from a wireless access point coupled to a network, wherein the information indicates the time zone; and in response to receiving the time zone, adjusting the time clock to provide a time corresponding to time in the received time zone in which said wireless communication device is located.

13 . The program product of claim 12 , further comprising the function of receiving the known location of a wireless access point wirelessly communicating with the wireless communication device, thereby advising the wireless communication device of its location.

14 . The program product of claim 12 , further comprising program logic that when executed perform the function of determining the location of the wireless communication device in accordance with the known location of a wireless access point wirelessly communicating with the wireless communication device.

15 . The program product of claim 12 , further comprising program logic that when executed perform the function of updating a schedule to correspond to the time in the time zone where the wireless communication device is located.
