Abstract

A geographic-based communications service system has a mobile unit for transmitting/receiving information, and access points connected to a network. The access points are arranged in a known geographic locations and transmit and receive information from the mobile unit. When one of the access points detects the presence of the mobile unit, it sends a signal to the network indicating the location of the mobile unit and the information requested by the mobile unit. Based on the signal received from the access point, the network communicates with information providers connected to the network and provides data to the mobile unit through the access point corresponding to the location of the mobile unit.

1 . A method comprising: 
 wirelessly transmitting a geographic location of a wireless communication device from the wireless communication device;    receiving promotion information dependent upon the transmitted geographic location; and    presenting the promotion information on the wireless communication device after said receiving.    
   
   
       2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the promotion information is dependent upon a profile of the user.  
   
   
       3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the promotion information is dependent upon past transactions of the user.  
   
   
       4 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the promotion information comprises promotions of a first provider of goods and/or services proximate to the geographic location of the wireless communication device.  
   
   
       5 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the promotion information comprises an advertisement.  
   
   
       6 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein the advertisement comprises information regarding goods or services proximate to the geographic location of the wireless communication device.  
   
   
       7 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein an access point communicates with the wireless communication device, the method further comprising: 
 receiving the geographic location of the wireless communication device from the access point.    
   
   
       8 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the geographic location of the wireless communication device comprises a geographic location of an access point communicating with the wireless communication device and the promotion information is dependent upon the geographic location of the access point.  
   
   
       9 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising receiving the known location of a wireless access point wirelessly communicating with the wireless communication device, thereby advising the wireless communication device of its location.  
   
   
       10 . A wireless communication device comprising: 
 a wireless receiver and transmitter configured to receive and transmit information over a wireless communication link, wherein the wireless receiver and transmitter is operable to communicate over the wireless communication link with a wireless access point coupled to a network; and    computing logic configured to wirelessly transmit a geographic location of the wireless communication device and receive promotion information dependent upon the transmitted geographic location, and wherein the computing logic is further configured to present the promotion information on the wireless communication device after said receiving.    
   
   
       11 . The device of  claim 10 , wherein the computing logic comprises a processor.  
   
   
       12 . The device of  claim 10 , wherein the promotion information is dependent upon a profile of the user.  
   
   
       13 . The device of  claim 10 , wherein the promotion information is dependent upon past transactions of the user.  
   
   
       14 . The device of  claim 10 , wherein the promotion information comprises promotions of a first provider of goods and/or services proximate to the geographic location of the wireless communication device.  
   
   
       15 . The device of  claim 10 , wherein the promotion information comprises an advertisement.  
   
   
       16 . The device of  claim 10 , wherein the advertisement comprises information regarding goods or services proximate to the geographic location of the wireless communication device.  
   
   
       17 . The device of  claim 10 , wherein the geographic location of the wireless communication device comprises a geographic location of an access point communicating with the wireless communication device and the promotion information is dependent upon the geographic location of the access point.  
   
   
       18 . The device of  claim 10 , wherein the computing logic is configured to receive the known location of a wireless access point wirelessly communicating with the wireless communication device, thereby advising the wireless communication device of its location.  
   
   
       19 . The device of  claim 10 , wherein the computing logic comprises a processor and a memory, wherein the memory stores program instructions which are executable by the processor to: 
 wirelessly transmit a geographic location of a wireless communication device from the wireless communication device;    receive promotion information dependent upon the transmitted geographic location; and    present the promotion information on the wireless communication device after said receiving.    
   
   
       20 . A program product comprising a machine-readable medium including program logic therein that when executed perform the functions of: 
 transmitting a geographic location of a wireless communication device from the wireless communication device over a wireless communication link;    receiving promotion information dependent upon the transmitted geographic location over the wireless communication link; and    presenting the promotion information to a user on the wireless communication device after said receiving.    
   
   
       21 . The program product of  claim 20 , wherein the promotion information is dependent upon a profile of the user.  
   
   
       22 . The program product of  claim 20 , wherein the promotion information comprises promotions of a first provider of goods and/or services proximate to the geographic location of the wireless communication device.  
   
   
       23 . The program product of  claim 20 , wherein the promotion information comprises an advertisement.  
   
   
       22 . The program product of  claim 20 , wherein the advertisement comprises information regarding goods or services proximate to the geographic location of the wireless communication device.  
   
   
       23 . A system comprising: 
 a processor;    a memory coupled to the processor, wherein the memory stores program instructions which are executable by the processor to: 
 transmitting a geographic location of a wireless communication device from the wireless communication device over a wireless communication link;  
   receiving promotion information dependent upon the transmitted geographic location over the wireless communication link; and    presenting the promotion information to a user on the wireless communication device after said receiving.    
   
   
       24 . The system of  claim 23 , wherein the identity information of the user indicates a profile of the user and wherein the promotion information is dependent upon the profile of the user.  
   
   
       25 . The system of  claim 23 , wherein said promotion information comprises advertising related to goods or services.
