Abstract

A method and apparatus for performing network-based control functions on an alert-enabled managed client. An alert proxy translates generic, management-based command data received from a management application/agent into specific client-based hardware control data. The alert proxy transmits a data packet containing the hardware control data over a network to an alert-enabled managed client. Alert hardware within the alert-enabled managed client parses the hardware control data into control bits and utilizes the control bits to set or clear registers within the alert-enabled managed client so as to effectuate the specified control operations. The control operations may be performed on the alert-enabled managed client independent of the operational status of the alert-enabled managed client's operating system.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . An article of manufacture comprising a computer-readable medium having content stored thereon to provide instructions to result in an electronic device performing operations including:
detecting an alert event on a client device; forming a platform-independent alert packet representing the alert event; transmitting the alert packet to an alert proxy external to the client device; and receiving automatically a hardware-specific data control packet from the alert proxy in response to the transmission of the alert packet, the data control packet comprising one or more specified control operations to be performed on the client device when the client device is in a system hung state.

2 . The article of manufacture of claim 1 , wherein the one or more specified control operations includes receiving a system reset operation.

3 . The article of manufacture of claim 1 , wherein the one or more specified control operations includes receiving a system power operation.

4 . The article of manufacture of claim 1 , wherein said current operating state of said client device is determined by inspecting at least one status register on said client.

5 . The article of manufacture of claim 1 , wherein the hardware-specific data control packet is encapsulated according to a remote management and control protocol (RMCP).
