Methods related to self-sealing structural installation strip assembly
Abstract
Methods related to self-sealing structural installation strip assemblies for a framed unit are discussed. The installation strip assembly comprises a main body having an inner portion and an outer portion. In some examples, a leg of the inner portion, in conjunction with portions of a unit groove seal, are received and retained in a groove of a unit frame member. The unit groove seal provides a seal between the installation strip assembly and the framed unit. At the building site, the installation strip may be folded from a substantially flush position with respect to a frame member to an outwardly extending position so that the strip may be secured using one or more fasteners to a building structure extending around a rough unit opening. The upper portion of the main body may include at least one of a fastener seal, a flashing seal, or a wall seal.

exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A method of manufacturing an installation strip assembly insertable into a groove of a unit frame member, the method comprising:
forming a main body having an inner portion and an outer portion interconnected along a fold line, including forming a groove insertion leg which extends transversely from an adjacent portion of the main body; bonding a unit groove seal substantially to the inner portion of the main body; and bonding at least one of a fastener seal or a flashing seal to the outer portion of the main body.
2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising attaching a wall seal to an outer end of the outer portion of the main body.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein bonding the unit groove seal substantially to the inner portion of the main body includes covering the fold line to prevent the passage of moisture therethrough.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein bonding the unit groove seal substantially to the inner portion of the main body includes creating a lineal seal between the installation strip assembly and the unit frame member.
5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein bonding the fastener seal or the flashing seal to the main body includes creating a seal between an installation fastener and the main body.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein bonding the fastener seal or the flashing seal to the main body includes bonding the fastener seal or the flashing seal over one or more fastener holes.
7 . A method comprising:
forming a main body having an inner portion and an outer portion interconnected along a fold line, including forming a groove insertion leg which extends transversely from an adjacent portion of the main body; and bonding a unit groove seal substantially to the inner portion of the main body, including bonding the unit groove seal to a substantial portion of the groove insertion leg.
8 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising attaching a wall seal to an outer end of the main body outer portion.
9 . The method of claim 7 , wherein forming the main body includes forming a metal.
10 . The method of claim 7 , wherein bonding the unit groove seal substantially to the inner portion of the main body includes covering the main body with the unit groove seal from the groove insertion leg to a location on the outer portion of the main body near the fold line.
11 . A method comprising:
forming a main body having an inner portion and an outer portion interconnected along a fold line, including forming a groove insertion leg which extends transversely from an adjacent portion of the main body; and bonding at least one of a fastener seal or a flashing seal to the outer portion of the main body.
12 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising attaching a wall seal to an outer end of the main body outer portion.
13 . The method of claim 11 , wherein forming the main body includes forming a metal.
14 . The method of claim 11 , wherein bonding the fastener seal or the flashing seal includes bonding the fastener seal to a front side surface of the main body and bonding the flashing seal to a back side surface of the main body.
15 . The method of claim 11 , wherein bonding the fastener seal or the flashing seal to the outer portion of the main body includes bonding the fastener seal or the flashing seal over one or more fastener holes.
16 . A method of mounting a framed unit to a support structure surrounding a rough unit opening, the method comprising:
pivoting an installation strip assembly attached to the framed unit from a closed position to an open position, including pivoting a main body along a fold line covered by a portion of a unit groove seal; placing the framed unit within the rough unit opening; inserting one or more fasteners through at least one of a fastener seal or a flashing seal and the main body; and securing the installation strip assembly to the surrounding support structure, including advancing the one or more fasteners into the surrounding support structure.
17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein pivoting the installation strip assembly includes moving an outer portion of the strip assembly from a position substantially flush with a frame member of the framed unit to a position in which the outer portion extends outwardly form the frame member.
18 . The method of claim 16 , wherein inserting the one or more fasteners through the fastener seal and the main body includes using one or more fastener placement indicators integrated with the fastener seal.
19 . The method of claim 16 , wherein inserting the one or more fasteners through the fastener seal and the main body includes penetrating the fastener seal prior to penetrating the main body.
