Interactive wagering systems and processes
Abstract
Systems and processes for interactive off-track wagering are provided. A user reviews racing information and places bets using an off-track terminal. The user interactively selects a desired racetrack and race. Odds, pools, and payoff amounts may be viewed for a variety of complex wager types. To place a wager, the user selects a wager type, wager amount, and the desired runners. Account information can be reviewed. If desired, the user can transfer funds from a bank account to an account used for wagering. Racing videos can be viewed while the user reviews odds and places bets. Video clips of past races can be ordered. Related advertisements can be presented using text or video clips. Merchandise may be ordered interactively. Information regarding system usage may be gathered.

2 . A method for providing interactive wagering on races with a user terminal that is remote from any racetrack, comprising:
providing a display of available tracks at which races are to be run; providing a user with an opportunity to select one of the available tracks; receiving a user selection of a track from the available tracks; in response to receiving the user selection:
selecting a racing video simulcast corresponding to the selected track; and
providing a display of the selected racing video simulcast; and
providing the user with an opportunity to interactively place a wager on a race to be run at the selected track.
3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein selecting the racing video simulcast corresponding to the selected track comprises selecting the racing video simulcast from a plurality of racing video simulcasts.
4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the display of available tracks includes the names of at least two tracks and a race number corresponding to the next race to be run at each of the at least two tracks.
5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the display of available tracks further includes a post time for each of the at least two tracks.
6 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising displaying odds for the next race to be run at the selected track in response to receiving the user selection.
7 . The method of claim 6 , further comprising automatically updating the displayed odds.
8 . The method of claim 7 , further comprising automatically updating the displayed odds to show odds for a subsequent race after the post time has passed for a previous race.
9 . The method of claim 2 , wherein providing the user with an opportunity to interactively place a wager on a race to be run at the selected track further comprises providing the user with the opportunity to bypass at least one selection step in placing the wager.
10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the at least one selection step is selected from the group consisting of: a selection of a track, a selection of a race, a selection of a wager amount, and a selection of a wager type.
11 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising displaying a plurality of runners and information on scratches for the race to be run at the selected track.
12 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising allowing the user to use the user terminal to place a win, place, show, exacta, and trifecta wager on the race.
13 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the racing video simulcast is received from a video and data distribution facility.
14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the racing video simulcast is compressed.
15 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising:
maintaining a wagering account associated with a user; providing the user with an opportunity to transfer funds from a bank account associated with the user to the wagering account associated with the user; and providing the user with an opportunity to place a wager on a race to be run at the selected track using funds from the wagering account associated with the user.
16 . The method of claim 2 , wherein providing the display of the selected racing video simulcast comprises providing the display of the selected racing video simulcast in one region of a display device, the method further comprising displaying wagering information in a different region of the display device, wherein the one region and the different region do not overlap.
17 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising changing the size of the display of the selected racing video simulcast when post time is approached.
18 . A system for interactive wagering on races, comprising a user terminal configured to:
provide a display of available tracks at which races are to be run; provide a user with an opportunity to select one of the available tracks; receive a user selection of a track from the available tracks; in response to receiving the user selection:
select a racing video simulcast corresponding to the selected track; and
provide a display of the selected racing video simulcast; and
provide the user with an opportunity to interactively place a wager on a race to be run at the selected track.
19 . The system defined in claim 18 wherein the user terminal selects the racing video simulcast corresponding to the selected track comprises by selecting the racing video simulcast from a plurality of racing video simulcasts.
20 . The system defined in claim 18 wherein the display of available tracks includes the names of at least two tracks and a race number corresponding to the next race to be run at each of the at least two tracks.
21 . The system defined in claim 20 wherein the display of available tracks further includes a post time for each of the at least two tracks.
22 . The system defined in claim 18 wherein the user terminal is further configured to display odds for the next race to be run at the selected track in response to receiving the user selection.
23 . The system defined in claim 22 wherein the user terminal is further configured to automatically update the displayed odds.
24 . The system defined in claim 23 wherein the user terminal is further configured to automatically update the displayed odds to show odds for a subsequent race after the post time has passed for a previous race.
25 . The system defined in claim 18 wherein the user terminal is further configured to provide the user with an opportunity to interactively place a wager on a race to be run at the selected track by providing the user with the opportunity to bypass at least one selection step in placing the wager.
26 . The system defined in claim 25 wherein the at least one selection step is selected from the group consisting of: a selection of a track, a selection of a race, a selection of a wager amount, and a selection of a wager type.
27 . The system defined in claim 18 wherein the user terminal is further configured to display a plurality of runners and information on scratches for the race to be run at the selected track.
28 . The system defined in claim 18 wherein the user terminal is further configured to allow the user to place a win, place, show, exacta, and trifecta wager on the race.
29 . The system defined in claim 18 wherein the user terminal is further configured to receive the racing video simulcast from a video and data distribution facility.
30 . The system defined in claim 29 wherein the racing video simulcast is compressed.
31 . The system defined in claim 18 wherein the user terminal is further configured to:
maintain a wagering account associated with a user; provide the user with an opportunity to transfer funds from a bank account associated with the user to the wagering account associated with the user; and provide the user with an opportunity to place a wager on a race to be run at the selected track using funds from the wagering account associated with the user.
32 . The system defined in claim 18 wherein the user terminal is further configured to provide the display of the selected racing video simulcast by providing the display of the selected racing video simulcast in one region of a display device, and displaying wagering information in a different region of the display device, wherein the one region and the different region do not overlap.
