Abstract
A stump cutting tool for use with a stump cutting apparatus having a rotatable cutting wheel or drum having at least one cutting tool mounted to the wheel or drum. The cutting tool includes a tool holder or pocket used to secure a separate cutting tooth. The pocket or tool holder includes the least one bore extending therethrough for use in securing the cutting tool to the cutting wheel or drum.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A stump cutting tool for use with a stump cutting apparatus of the type utilizing a cutting wheel or drum rotating about a rotational axis, wherein the cutting tooth is attached to the cutting wheel or drum, the cutting tooth comprising:
a pocket removeably secured to the stump cutting apparatus, said pocket having a bore extending from a distal end of said pocket to a proximal end of said pocket, said proximate end being the end closer to the axis or rotation; and a cutting tool disposed in retained within said bore, said cutting tooth having a cutting tip attached thereto.
2 . A cutting tool for use with a stump cutting apparatus of the type utilizing a cutting wheel or drum rotating about a rotational axis, wherein the cutting tool is attached to the cutting wheel or drum, the cutting tool comprising:
a pocket that can be secured to the cutting wheel, said pocket having a bore extending from a distal end of said pocket to a proximal end of said pocket, said proximal end of said pocket being that end closer to the axis of rotation of the cutting wheel; a cutting tooth having a front face and a cutting tip secured on said front face, said cutting tooth disposed and retained within said bore;
3 . A cutting tool as set forth in claim 2 wherein said bore is located between an inner face and an outer face of said pocket.
4 . A cutting tool as set forth in claim 3 wherein said pocket includes a seat, said seat extending rearwardly from said bore toward a trailing surface of said pocket.
5 . A cutting tool as set forth in claim 4 wherein at least a portion of said seat is an arcuate surface.
6 . A cutting tool as set forth in claim 3 wherein at least a portion of said seat is skewed with respect to a longitudinal axis of said bore.
7 . A cutting tool as set forth in claim 2 including the proximal end of said pocket having a cutout area, a portion of said cut out area defining an engagement surface; and
a portion of said cutting tooth when inserted into said bore, extending beyond said bore and into said cutout area such that said portion of said cutting tooth extending beyond said bore forms a portion of a retainer assembly that cooperates with said engagement surface to secure said cutting tooth to said pocket.
8 . A cutting tool for use with a stump cutting apparatus of the type utilizing a cutting wheel or drum rotating about a rotational axis, wherein the cutting tool is attached to the cutting wheel or drum, the cutting tool comprising:
a pocket that can be secured to the cutting wheel, said pocket having a bore located between an inner face and an outer face of said pocket and extending from a distal end of said pocket to a proximal end of said pocket, said proximal end being that end closer to the axis of rotation of the cutting wheel, said pocket further including a notch extending rearwardly from said bore toward a trailing surface of said pocket, a lower surface of said notch forming a seat, wherein at least a portion of said seat is a concave arcuate surface and the proximal end of said pocket having a cutout area, a portion thereof defining an engagement surface; and a cutting tooth having an elongated body having a longitudinal axis with a distal end and a proximal end, said proximal end being that end closer to the rotational axis of the cutting wheel when the cutting tooth is attached via the pocket to the cutting wheel, said elongated body including a lateral axis, a head portion located on the distal end of said elongated body, said head portion including a front surface, a rear surface disposed laterally behind said front surface and opposing side surfaces extending laterally from said front surface to said rear surface, a shank portion located on the proximal end of said elongated body, said shank portion including a threaded portion, and a shoulder, said shoulder extending between said shank portion and said head portion, said shoulder including a shoulder surface at least a portion of said shoulder surface is a convex arcuate surface, wherein said cutting tooth is disposed is said bore such that a portion of the threaded portion of said shank portion extends through said bore, past said engagement surface and into said cutout area such that said shoulder surface of said cutting tooth engages said seat of said pocket; and a nut threadably placed on said threaded portion of said shank portion engages said engagement surface of said cutout area to retain said cutting tooth on said pocket.
9 . A cutting tool as set forth in claim 8 wherein at least a portion of said seat and said shoulder are skewed with respect to the longitudinal axis of said bore.
10 . A cutting tool as set forth in claim 8 wherein said front surface of said cutting tooth having an arcuate configuration complementary to the arcuate configuration of the bore whereby the front surface of said cutting tooth engages the bore when said cutting tooth is retained on said pocket.
11 . A cutting tool as set forth in claim 8 including a rear support surface extending longitudinally from said seat toward said the distal end of said pocket, said rear support surface complementary to and engaging said rear surface of said cutting tooth when said cutting tooth is retained on said pocket.
12 . A cutting tool as set forth in claim 8 wherein said notch includes respective side surfaces, said side surfaces complementary to said side surfaces of said cutting tooth such that said side surfaces of said notch of said pocket are adjacent to and support said side surfaces of said cutting tooth when said cutting tooth is retained on said pocket.
13 . A tool holder for use with a stump cutting apparatus comprising:
a body, said body including an inner face and an outer face; a throughbore extending through said body between said inner face and said outer face; and said throughbore including a countersunk portion, said a countersunk portion including a conical surface.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
