Abstract

A medicant reconstitution system is provided which has a generally flexible fluid bag with associated administration and reconstitution ports. The reconstitution port is adapted for receiving a medicant container and the administration port is for administering a medical fluid to a patient. According to one aspect of the present invention, the administration and reconstitution ports are integrated in a relatively rigid port structure. According to another aspect of the present invention, the reconstitution port receives a piercing member which is rotatable to a selected position to establish fluid flow. According to yet another aspect of the present invention, one of the reconstitution port and the piercing member includes a cutting edge, while the other includes a frangible member. Contact between the cutting edge and the frangible member opens the frangible member to establish fluid flow.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 - 37 . (canceled)

       38 : A medicant delivery system comprising:
a medical container defining an interior chamber for containing a medical fluid; a port associated with the container and adapted to be placed in fluid communication with a medicant container, the port including at least one frangible member openable to define an opening into the interior chamber, and a rotatable cutting member received within the port, the cutting member including a cutting edge, wherein the cutting member is rotatable relative to the port to bring the cutting edge and the frangible member into contact to open the frangible member.

39 : The medicant delivery system of claim 38 , further including an administration port for delivering fluid to a patient.

40 : The medicant delivery system of claim 39 , at least one of the port and the administration port formed integrally with the medical container.

41 : The medicant delivery system of claim 38 , the cutting member including a projection configured to engage a barrier on the port to form a standby lock to prevent inadvertent rotation of the cutting member relative to the port.

42 : The medicant delivery system of claim 41 , the cutting member being rotatable relative to the port to overcome the standby lock through persistent rotation.

43 : The medicant delivery system of claim 42 , the projection and the barrier configured to provide a tactile indicator that the standby lock is overcome.

44 : The medicant delivery system of claim 38 , the cutting and the port configured so that the cutting member rotates to a final lock position after the cutting edge opens the frangible member, the final lock position preventing further rotation of the cutting member.

45 : The medicant delivery system of claim 44 , the final lock position configured to provide a tactile indicator that the final lock is formed.

46 : The medicant delivery system of claim 38 , wherein the cutting member is tubular to provide a fluid path through the member.

47 : The medicant delivery system of claim 38 , wherein the cutting member defines a first aperture that mates with a second aperture formed when the frangible member is opened to allow the medical fluid to pass from the interior chamber of the medical container, through the first and second apertures, and to the medicant container.

48 : The medicant delivery system of claim 38 , wherein the cutting member includes two cutting edges.

49 : The medicant delivery system of claim 38 , the cutting edge formed on an exterior wall of the cutting member.

50 : The medicant delivery system of claim 38 , the frangible member formed on an interior wall of the port.

51 : The medicant delivery system of claim 38 , wherein the frangible member cannot be closed after being opened.

       52 : A medicant delivery system comprising:
a medical container defining an interior chamber capable of containing a medical fluid; a port associated with the container, the port including a frangible member openable to define an opening into the interior chamber, and a rotatable cutting member received within the port and adapted to communicate fluidly with a medicant container, the cutting member including a plurality of cutting edges, the cutting member being rotatable relative to the port when engaged by the medicament container to bring at least one of the plurality of cutting edges and the frangible member into contact to open the frangible member.

53 : A method for transferring medical fluid between a medical container and a medicant container, the medical container having a port, the method comprising:
rotationally cutting an opening in the port and transferring fluid between the medical container and medicant container.

54 : The method of claim 53 , further including locking the medicant container to a cutting member to allow the medicant container and cutting member to be rotated together.

55 : The method of claim 54 , further including rotating the medicant container to rotate the cutting member relative to the port to cut the opening.

56 : The method of claim 54 , further including rotating the cutting member to a locked position after cutting the opening in the port.

57 : The method of claim 54 , which includes rotating the cutting member past an interference for preventing inadvertent cutting to cut the opening in the port.
