Method of affixing a design to a surface
Abstract
Compositions, methods, apparatuses, kits, and combinations are described for permanently or temporarily re-designing, decorating, and/or re-coloring a surface. The compositions useful in the present disclosure include a décor product that is formulated to be applied and affixed to a surface. If desired, the décor product may be substantially removed from the surface before being affixed thereto. If a user desires to remove the décor product, the décor product is formulated to be removed by a number of methods including, for example, vacuuming, wet extraction, chemical application, and the like. If the user desires to affix the décor product to the surface in a permanent or semi-permanent manner, the décor product may be affixed to the surface by applying energy thereto in the form of, for example, by a sealant composition such as, for example, a solvent. The décor product may also be utilized in the form of a kit or in conjunction with a design device, such as a stencil, to control the application of the décor product to create, for example, a pattern on the surface.

applying to a surface an amount of a composition comprising a liquid carrier, an emulsifier, and substantially homogenous particles comprising a colorant, a catalyst, and a resin, the resin comprising at least one of an acrylic, an acrylic latex, a polyester, a urethane, or an epoxy, and forming particulates of the substantially homogeneous particles attached to the surface; contacting the particulates attached to the surface with an amount of a sealant composition sufficient to bond a portion of the particulates to the surface; and allowing a majority portion of the sealant composition to evaporate from the particulates to affix the colorant to the surface.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the sealant composition comprises an organic solvent.
3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the organic solvent is selected from the group consisting of butyl carbitol, propylene glycol diacetate, hexyl cellosolve, dipropylene glycol monobutyl ether, dipropylene glycol monomethyl ether, ethyl lactate, dipropylene glycol dimethyl ether, dipropylene glycol propyl ether, and combinations thereof.
4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the organic solvent is present in an amount from about 0.01% to about 100% by weight.
5 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the organic solvent is present in an amount from about 0.1% to about 35% by weight.
6 . The method of claim 1 , further including allowing the composition to substantially dry before the particulates are contacted with the sealant composition.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the resin is an acid terminated polyester resin.
8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition further comprises at least one of a flow additive, a degassing additive, a propellant, a surfactant, an antioxidant, a heat stabilizer, a UV absorber, a wax, a silicone additive, a texturing agent, an electrical charge control additive, an electrical conductivity additive, a processing aid, a colorant, or a filler.
9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition further includes a rheology modifier.
10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the substantially homogenous particles have a mean particle size of less than about 100 μm when substantially suspended in the liquid carrier.
11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the substantially homogeneous particles have a mean particle size of about 35 μm to about 75 μm when substantially suspended in the liquid carrier.
12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the composition is allowed to dry for a time period greater than about 8 hours before contacting the particulate with the sealant composition.
13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the catalyst comprises at least one of a phenolic curative, a glycidyl curative, a stannous organic catalyst, triphenylethyl phosphonium bromide, a heterocyclic nitrogen compound, an epoxy acid, an epoxy amidine, an epoxy anhydride catalyst, a dicyandiamide, a uretdione, an aminoplast, a blocked isocyanate, triethyleneamine, triethylenediamine, tribenzylamine, a tertiary amine, a polyamine, and a modified polyamine.
14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the emulsifier is present from about 0.1% to about 13.5% by weight.
15 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the liquid carrier is water and is present from about 86.5% to about 99% by weight.
16 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the substantially homogenous particles are present from about 1% to about 10% by weight.
17 . A method of attaching a colorant to a surface, the method comprising:
providing a composition in a first dispensing device, the composition comprising a liquid carrier, an emulsifier, and substantially homogenous colorant particles comprising a colorant, a catalyst, and a resin, the resin comprising at least one of an acrylic, an acrylic latex, a polyester, a urethane, or an epoxy; providing a sealant composition in a second dispensing device; applying from the first dispensing device an amount of the composition to a surface to form particulates of the substantially homogeneous colorant particles attached to the surface; applying from the second dispensing device an amount of the sealant composition to the particulates sufficient to dissolve the substantially homogeneous colorant particles contacted by the sealant composition and to allow a portion of the dissolved substantially homogenous colorant particles to flow onto the surface; and allowing the sealant composition to evaporate from the particulates to affix the portion of the dissolved substantially homogenous colorant particles to the surface.
18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein at least one of the first dispensing device and the second dispensing device comprise an aerosol dispenser that includes a propellant.
19 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the sealant composition comprises an organic solvent.
20 . A kit, comprising:
a first dispensing device containing a composition, the composition comprising a liquid carrier, an emulsifier, and substantially homogenous colorant particles comprising a colorant, a catalyst, and a resin, the resin comprising at least one of an acrylic, an acrylic latex, a polyester, a urethane, or an epoxy; a second dispensing device containing a sealant composition; and an optional set of instructions to assist a user in applying the composition and the sealant composition to a surface.Join the waitlist — get patent alerts
