System and method for associating a client identity between servers

Abstract

A client identity is associated between servers by establishing an identity for the client at a first sever utilizing a cookie transmitted to the client by the first server and transmitting to the client by the first server a URL, wherein the URL includes the identity established at the first server and information identifying the first server, and wherein the URL is transmitted by the client to the second server.

1 . A method for associating a client's identity between servers, the method comprising:
 establishing an identity for the client at a first sever utilizing a cookie transmitted to the client by the first server;   transmitting to the client by the first server a URL, wherein the URL includes the identity established at the first server and information identifying the first server; and   transmitting by the client the URL to the second server.   
   
   
       2 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising, transmitting by the first server to the second server information about the client associated with the client at the first server. 
   
   
       3 . The method of  claim 2 , wherein the information about the client includes one or more of demographic information, geographic information and user interest information. 
   
   
       4 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising, transmitting by the client to the second server a URL, wherein the URL includes the identity established at the first server; information identifying the first server; and information about the client associated with the client at the first server. 
   
   
       5 . The method of  claim 4 , wherein the information about the client includes one or more of demographic information, geographic information and user interest information. 
   
   
       6 . A system operable to associate a client's identity between servers, the system comprising:
 a first server, a second server and a client in communication with the first server and second server, wherein the first server is adapted to establish an identity for the client by utilizing a cookie transmitted to the client by the first server; wherein the first server is adapted to transmit to the client a URL; wherein the URL includes the identity established at the first server and information identifying the first server; and wherein the client is adapted to transmit the URL to the second server.   
   
   
       7 . The system of  claim 6 , wherein the first server is adapted to transmit to the second server information about the client associated with the client at the first server. 
   
   
       8 . The system of  claim 7 , wherein the information about the client includes one or more of demographic information, geographic information and user interest information. 
   
   
       9 . The system of  claim 6 , wherein the client is adapted to transmit to the second server a URL, wherein the URL includes the identity established at the first server; information identifying the first server; and information about the client associated with the client at the first server. 
   
   
       10 . The system of  claim 9 , wherein the information about the client includes one or more of demographic information, geographic information and user interest information. 
   
   
       11 . A method for sharing information about a user between servers, the method comprising:
 identifying the user at a first server using a first ID;   identifying the user at a second server using a second ID;   linking at the first server the first ID and the second ID;   associating information about the user at the second server with the second ID;   sending the information about the user from the second server to the first server; and   associating the information about the user at the first server with the first ID.   
   
   
       12 . The method of  claim 11 , wherein the first server and the second server respectively identify the user using the first ID and the second ID by respectively establishing the first ID and the second ID for a computer utilized by the user to communicate with the first server and the second server. 
   
   
       13 . The method of  claim 12 , wherein the first server and the second server respectively establish the first ID and the second ID for the computer by respectively transmitting a cookie to the computer.
