Abstract

This invention includes a wettable biomedical device containing a high molecular weight hydrophilic polymer and a hydroxyl-functionalized silicone-containing monomer.

         163 . A contact lens comprising:
 a polymer that is formed from reactants that include at least one silicone-containing monomer that is present in an amount of about 5% to about 90% by weight of said reactants; and,   a photochromic dye;   said contact lens having an oxygen permeation coefficient between about 40 and about 300.   
     
     
         164 . The contact lens according to  claim 163  wherein said reactants further comprise:
 at least one monomer containing an acrylic group, at least one monomer containing a vinyl group, or both; and,   a crosslinker having two or more polymerizable functional groups.   
     
     
         165 . The contact lens according to  claim 163  wherein said photochromic dye is included in said contact lens by including said dye among said reactants. 
     
     
         166 . The contact lens according to  claim 163  wherein said oxygen permeation coefficient is greater than about 70. 
     
     
         167 . The contact lens according to  claim 163  wherein said reactants include a monomer comprising 3-methacryloxypropyltris(trimethylsiloxy)silane. 
     
     
         168 . The contact lens according to  claim 163  wherein said silicone-containing monomer includes one or more C 1 -C 6  alkylacrylates. 
     
     
         169 . The contact lens according to  claim 168  wherein said silicone-containing monomer includes one or more methacrylates. 
     
     
         170 . The contact lens according to  claim 168  wherein said reactants further comprise one or more fluorine-containing monomers. 
     
     
         171 . The contact lens according to  claim 170  wherein said one or more fluorine-containing monomers is a fluorine-containing alkyl(meth)acrylate. 
     
     
         172 . The contact lens according to  claim 163  further comprising a high molecular weight hydrophilic polymer.

 a polymer that is formed from reactants that include at least one silicone-containing (meth)acrylate monomer; and,   a photochromic dye;   said contact lens having an oxygen permeation coefficient between about 40 and about 300.   
     
     
         174 . The contact lens according to  claim 173  wherein said reactants further comprise one or more fluorine-containing monomers. 
     
     
         175 . The contact lens according to  claim 173  further comprising a high molecular weight hydrophilic polymer.
