Abstract
A coated veneered article has at least one visible wood veneer layer coated with a multilayer finishing system comprising a coating layer nearest the veneer layer comprising a cationically polymerized moiety or moiety polymerized via cationic and free radical cure mechanisms, and an outermost coating layer comprising a free radically polymerized moiety. The article exhibits less veneer checking than a veneered article coated only with free radically polymerized coating layers.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 . A coated veneered article at least one visible surface of which comprises a wood veneer layer coated with a multilayer finishing system comprising a coating layer nearest the veneer layer comprising a cationically polymerized moiety or moiety polymerized via cationic and free radical cure mechanisms, and an outermost coating layer comprising a free radically polymerized moiety, and wherein the coated veneered article exhibits less veneer checking than a veneered article coated only with free radically polymerized coating layers.
2 . An article according to claim 1 comprising a cationically polymerized clearcoat or stain atop the veneer layer.
3 . An article according to claim 2 comprising a cationically polymerized filler atop the clearcoat or stain.
4 . An article according to claim 3 comprising a cationically polymerized sealer atop the filler.
5 . An article according to claim 1 comprising at least two subsurface layers comprising cationically polymerized moieties.
6 . An article according to claim 1 comprising a cationically polymerized layer atop the veneer layer, a cationically and free radically polymerized layer atop the cationically polymerized layer, and a free radically polymerized topcoat atop the cationically and free radically polymerized layer.
7 . An article according to claim 1 comprising a subsurface coating layer comprising a UV cured epoxide.
8 . An article according to claim 1 comprising a subsurface coating layer comprising a UV cured epoxycyclohexanecarboxylate.
9 . An article according to claim 1 comprising a subsurface coating layer comprising a cationically and free radically polymerized UV cured moiety.
10 . An article according to claim 1 comprising a subsurface coating layer comprising a UV cured acrylated epoxide.
11 . An article according to claim 1 comprising a medium density fiberboard core.
12 . An article according to claim 1 comprising an ash, birch, cherry, mahogany, maple, oak, poplar, teak, hickory or walnut veneer layer.
13 . An article according to claim 1 having a backside atop which is at least one layer comprising a UV cured cationically polymerized moiety.
14 . A coated veneered article at least one visible surface of which comprises a wood veneer layer coated with a multilayer finishing system comprising at least one subsurface layer comprising a UV cured cationically and free radically polymerized moiety and an outermost layer comprising a free radically polymerized moiety, wherein the coated veneered article exhibits less veneer checking than a veneered article coated only with free radically polymerized coating layers.Cited by (0)
