Modular total elbow prosthesis, humeral component and associated kit
Abstract
An ulnar assembly for use with a humeral component to form an elbow prosthesis is provided. The ulnar assembly includes a first component including a portion thereof defining a stem for implantation in a cavity formed in the ulna. The first component defines a longitudinal axis thereof generally coincident with the longitudinal axis of the ulna. The ulnar assembly also includes a second component attached to the first component. The second component is attachable and removable from the first component along the longitudinal axis of the first component. One of the first component and the second component include an external taper. The other of the first component and the second component defines an internal taper therein adapted to receive the external taper.
Claims
exact text as granted — not AI-modified1 - 12 . (canceled)
13 . An elbow prosthesis comprising:
an ulnar component, said ulnar component including a first portion thereof implantable in a cavity formed in the ulnar and a second portion thereof operably connected to the first portion; and a humeral component including a first portion including a portion thereof defining a stem for implantation in a cavity formed in the humerus, the first portion defining a longitudinal axis thereof generally coincident with the longitudinal axis of the humerus and a second portion attached to the first portion, said second portion attachable and removable from the first portion along the longitudinal axis of the first portion, wherein one of the first portion and the second portion of said humeral component comprises an external taper and wherein the other of the first portion and the second portion of said humeral component defines an internal taper therein adapted to receive said external taper.
14 . The elbow prosthesis of claim 13 , wherein the second portion said humeral component comprises a hinge portion thereof, the hinge portion defining a pivot axis thereof, the second portion adapted to permit bone to remain on the humerus through the pivot axis after implantation of said prosthesis into the humerus.
15 . The elbow prosthesis of claim 13 :
wherein the second portion of said humeral component defines a opening therein; and wherein the opening of the second portion of said humeral component is cooperable with a pin and the ulnar portion to form a semi-constrained prosthesis.
16 . The elbow prosthesis of claim 13 :
wherein the second portion of said humeral component includes a contact surface adapted for cooperation with said ulnar component; and wherein the second portion of said humeral component is adapted to be freely separated from the ulnar component in a direction normal to the contact surface.
17 . The elbow prosthesis of claim 16 , wherein the contact surface of said second portion of said humeral component is generally concave.
