Abstract

A tone ordered discrete multitone interleaver system and method, including a tone ordered interleaver and deinterleaver, are provided for efficiently communicating data despite noise affecting a Discrete Multitone modulation (DMT) system. The tone ordered discrete multitone interleaver forces interleaving of trellis encoded information by assigning a different number of bits to adjacent tones or adjacent tone pairs.

Claims

exact text as granted — not AI-modified
1 . A receiver, comprising:
a convolutional decoder configured to receive a stream of trellis symbols assigned to a plurality of tones, the convolutional decoder further configured to decode a plurality of interleaved data bits from the stream of trellis symbols; and a bit orderer configured to receive the plurality of interleaved data bits, the bit orderer further configured to assign the plurality of interleaved data bits to at least a first plurality of ordered data bits and a second plurality of ordered data bits.

2 . The receiver of claim 1 , wherein consecutive trellis symbols in the stream of trellis symbols assigned to nonconsecutive tones.

3 . The receiver of claim 2 , wherein the nonconsecutive tones are separated by M positions in an ordered bit table, where M is greater than 1.

4 . The receiver of claim 3 , wherein M is communicated to a remote transceiver that transmits the stream of trellis symbols.

5 . The receiver of claim 3 , wherein M is based on the quality of a transmission path between the receiver and a remote transceiver that transmitted the stream of trellis symbols.

6 . The receiver of claim 2 , wherein the nonconsecutive tones are a set of degraded tones identified from the plurality of tones by the receiver.

7 . The receiver of claim 6 , wherein the set of degraded tones is dynamically selectable by the receiver.

8 . The receiver of claim 1 , wherein the bit orderer assigns the first and second pluralities of ordered data bits in accordance with an ordered bit table.

       9 . A receiver, comprising:
means for convolutionally decoding a plurality of trellis symbols to produce a first plurality of bits associated with at least a first tone specified in an ordered bit table and a second plurality of bits associated with at least a second tone specified in the ordered bit table; and means for ordering the first plurality of bits and the second plurality of bits based upon the ordered bit table, the second tone separated in the ordered bit table by M tones from the first tone, where M is greater than 1.

10 . The receiver of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of symbols includes a first trellis symbol encoded with at least a portion of the bits in the first plurality of bits and a second trellis symbol encoded with at least a portion of the bits in the second plurality of bits, the second trellis symbol received immediately after the first trellis symbol.

11 . The receiver of claim 10 , wherein M is communicated to a remote transceiver that transmitted the first and second trellis symbols.

12 . The receiver of claim 10 , wherein M is based on the quality of a transmission path between the receiver and a remote transceiver that transmitted the plurality of trellis symbols.

13 . The receiver of claim 9 , further comprising means for receiving the plurality of trellis symbols.

14 . The receiver of claim 13 , wherein a number of bits and a relative gain associated with the first tone is communicated to a remote transceiver that transmits the plurality of trellis symbols.

15 . The receiver of claim 11 , further comprising:
means for assigning the first plurality of data bits to a frame.

16 . A method for receiving data, comprising:
convolutionally decoding a plurality of interleaved data bits from a stream of trellis symbols, the plurality of interleaved data bits including at least a first portion of the interleaved data bits associated with a first tone and a second portion of the interleaved data bits associated with a second tone; and ordering the first portion and the second portion of the interleaved data bits based upon an ordered bit table.

17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the second tone is separated from the first tone by M tones in the ordered bit table.

18 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the first portion of the interleaved data bits is associated with a first data frame.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the second portion of the interleaved data bits is associated with a second data frame.
