Abstract

A system and method for streaming media and, more particularly, to a system and method for active transcoding of content in a distributed system. The method includes receiving a file having predetermined parameters and sizing the file up to an optimal packet size according to a logarithmic scheme. The optimal packet size is a largest packet size. In further aspects, the method also includes providing a computer infrastructure operable to perform the steps herein. The system includes a media service, rules engine, log based job creator and a stream constructor. A computer infrastructure having computer readable medium to perform the processes described herein is also provided.

1 . A method comprising:
 receiving a file having predetermined parameters; and   sizing the file up to an optimal packet size according to a logarithmic scheme, the optimal packet size being a largest packet size.   
   
   
       2 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the logarithmic scheme is defined as log(x)*n, where n is the optimal packet size. 
   
   
       3 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the predetermined parameters include at least a file size, a current format and an export format. 
   
   
       4 . The method of  claim 3 , wherein the predetermined parameters further include the logarithmic scheme. 
   
   
       5 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising processing smaller sized packets prior to processing larger sized packets as determined by the sizing step. 
   
   
       6 . The method of  claim 5 , further comprising streaming processed smaller sized packets to a user while the larger sized packets are being processed. 
   
   
       7 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein as the smaller sized packets are processed and streamed, the file is further divided into the larger sized packets for processing, until the optimal packet size is reached and processed. 
   
   
       8 . The method of  claim 6 , wherein the smaller sized packets are provided with priority processing while the larger sized packets are scheduled later, thereby increasing response time of streaming of media. 
   
   
       9 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the sizing of the file is based on at least the optimal packet size and the sizing includes sizing packets of a same size, but smaller than the optimal size and an aggregate amount of the size packets can be processed simultaneously. 
   
   
       10 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the logarithmic scheme determines a size of a text file based on one of periods or paragraph ends. 
   
   
       11 . The method of  claim 1 , further comprising providing a scaling factor. 
   
   
       12 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the file is at least one of an audio, visual, audiovisual and text file. 
   
   
       13 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the sizing divides the file into different sized packets, which increase in size as time passes, until the optimal packet size is reached. 
   
   
       14 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein the steps of  claim 1  are provided by a service provider on a fee or subscription basis. 
   
   
       15 . The method of  claim 1 , wherein a service provider at least one of supports, maintains, deploys and creates a computer infrastructure operable to perform the steps of  claim 1 . 
   
   
       16 . A method for actively transcoding a file, comprising:
 providing a computer infrastructure operable to:
 receive a file with predetermined parameters; 
 size the file into different packet sizes up to an optimal packet size based on the predetermined parameters, with the optimal packet size being a largest packet size; and 
 send the different packet sizes for processing, in a priority processing order of smallest to the optimal packet size. 
   
   
   
       17 . The method of  claim 16 , wherein the computer infrastructure is at least one of supported, maintained, deployed and created by a service provider. 
   
   
       18 . The method of  claim 16 , wherein the steps of  claim 16  are provided on a fee or subscription basis. 
   
   
       19 . The method of  claim 16 , wherein the computer infrastructure is operable to order processed packets for sending to a user. 
   
   
       20 . The method of  claim 16 , wherein the computer infrastructure is operable to stream processed smaller packet sizes to a user while larger packet sizes are processed. 
   
   
       21 . The method of  claim 20 , wherein as the smaller packet sizes are processed and streamed, the computer infrastructure is operable to further divide the file into the larger packet sizes for processing, until the optimal packet size is reached and processed. 
   
   
       22 . The method of  claim 16 , wherein the computer infrastructure is operable to provide a different granularity to a time associated with streaming of media. 
   
   
       23 . The method of  claim 16 , wherein the logarithmic scheme is Log(x)*n, where n is the optimal size. 
   
   
       24 . The method of  claim 16 , wherein the computer infrastructure is operable to add a plurality of the different packet sizes over a period of time to equal the optimal size. 
   
   
       25 . A system comprising:
 a media service configured to receive a file with parameters from a user;   a rules engine configured to store at least one encoding rule associated with the file;   a log based job creator configured to split the file into different packet sizes up to a maximum of an optimal packet size based on the encoding rules or to be overridden by a logarithm scheme provided by the file as one of the parameters; and   a stream constructor configured to order a processed stream of data.   
   
   
       26 . The system of  claim 25 , wherein the media service searches for a current file size and file format and uses the current file size and the file format to look up in the rules engine the at least one encoding rule for the file. 
   
   
       27 . The system of  claim 25 , wherein the log based job creator determines the job scheduling using a logarithmic scheme. 
   
   
       28 . The system of  claim 25 , wherein the log based job creator uses the optimal packet size to determine packet sizes over time and stops the splitting into different packet sizes once the optimal packet size is reached. 
   
   
       29 . The system of  claim 25 , wherein the system is configured to split any of an audio file, a visual file, an audiovisual file or a text file. 
   
   
       30 . A computer infrastructure including computer readable medium having a computer program executable to provide:
 size a file into different packet sizes based on a logarithmic scheme using predetermined parameters of the file, with an optimal size being a largest packet size; and   send the different packet sizes for processing, in a priority processing order of smallest to the optimal size.
